Hi all,
We're hoping to go on vacation to the Jersey shore in September, so far the plans are a "go".

Any recommendations on beach/vacation supplies for Theo, besides the normal food & water, and towels, and k-9 blower, and treats, and??

Thank you!

Tarp...or sheets...to cover the floor and the bed, and any other upholstered furniture. Helps to keep wet dog/sand/dirt off the furniture (and the rug).

Every medical supply you can think of. Anti diarrhea, antibiotics (talk to the Vet before you go so you can get a short term Rx in case it's needed), vet wrap, gauze bandage, bandage tape, triple-antibiotic cream, hydrocortisone spray, ascriptin (buffered aspirin), tweezers, pepto tablets, ear drops/ointment, q-tips, cotton balls, etc.

Vet's #, rabies info (copy of the certificate), emergency Vet # in the area you're visiting, emergency numbers in case someone can't get hold of you (with someone authorized to speak for you for your animal's care), microchip # etc. I make a sheet for the car while traveling with all this info in plain sight just in case of an accident. I also state to please take the dog to a local Vet or boarding facility, and NOT to a shelter. And to call the specific person I've stated in the paper (someone who will pay to get the dog out of boarding, pay for medical care, and actually pick the dog up if necessary). I also put the dates I'm traveling and the starting and ending points (with the hotel #)...and also the reverse dates. Plus of course, my name, phone #'s (including home and cell).

Cleaning supplies (in case of vomiting from salt water in the room...or diarrhea) - paper towels, oxy something, rug cleaner, etc. Peroxide. (Has many uses) Vinegar too (usually white).

I've got a bag all stocked with this stuff all the time for trips with the dogs.

Donna, that is a great check list for traveling.... I do believe that it will be printed out and used at this house. Thanks

Melissa, Depending on where you go, there are a few dog beaches that you can go to. Most NJ beaches don't allow dogs until Oct. I can give you the names of great beaches that might be close to where you will be staying so that the whole family can go:) If you do plan to hang out on the beach all day with the Theo, then make sure to bring a beach umbrella to provide shade. Bring a long lead, and and extra collar that dries quickly. Also, find vets that are within close proximity to where you will be staying, in case of emergency (a 24hr one too), and have directions printed out on how to get there, along with their telephone #. Here's a quick list of dog beaches all along the NJ shore, just scroll down to NJ http://www.tidalflats.com/Dog_Beaches.html

Thanks Everyone!

Anthony99 - Ship Bottom, LBI

Tug - luckily the place has umbrellas....

Donna - wow what a list! we'll need a 3rd mini to take it all down there. No really, thanks for that info, it will be very helpful and I'll start packing now!

Meg - thanks for the update. I still have your list from before. I am really bummin' though about dogs not being allowed on the beach 'til Oct 1st!! I was sure our landlord told us after Labor Day - major bummer!! Already have the 2nd collar from your earlier pm. Can you walk them on the beach at night?....

If anyone thinks of anything else......PM me if you want to come visit while we are there!

Thanks all!

I'm right in Point Pleasant Beach, Manasquan has a dog beach right on the river by the inlet, take my dogs here frequently; I have a rental house in the Ocean Beach section of Lavallette, I always take my dogs there after labor day, no problem, there is also a bay beach on the same street, I take the dogs there even in the summer. If it is warm, bring an umbrella for the dogs, with my rental I have an outside shower & a hose for rinsing the dogs, rental is pet friendly. Island Beach State Park is also dog friendly, but must be on leash.

For the park, make sure the dogs are frontlined!
Water, bowls, food, plenty of places to get food in this area,
if you need to know, just PM me.

Where are you going tyo be staying?

Melissa, you guys can go to island beach state park, and stay there the entire day if you want with the pupperup. Just not where there is a life guard, which is only on one section. It is a really beautiful area, set in a state park, rugged natural seacoast beauty. I take Boj there all the time, even for day trips, I sun myself while he swims and plays. http://www.islandbeachnj.org/ if you are staying near here, this may be a good option for you for a day or two...also, depending where you are, some beaches do allow dogs after labor day:)

Thanks Meg! We'll see what happens probably stay mostly on the Island and not worry about too many trips! First vacation in like 4 years plus... it could rain the whole time and I don't think I would be too terribly upset. As long as my phone doesn't ring, no emails from work, and a great view of the ocean, ahhhhhhh I can smell the salt water now!

Besides what has been mentioned . . .

Living on the beach i find it nice and often necessary to have the following :

A WHISK BROOM - worth it's weight in GOLD. The small hand held stiff kind with no handle. I have one at every doorway, or getting in the car. Everyone whisks their feet (and legs and PAWS) before coming in the house, and getting in the car. You will be so glad you have this handy little item, and use it more than anything else you own.

A few PET TOP PORTABLE DRINKING DEVICES and the new attachments for them for the newer water bottles. This is SO much easier than doing the portable water bowl thing for being in the car, on the beach, or walking downtown. It just fits like a top on your favorite bottled water, and has a roller type no drip spout when upside down unless the dog is drinking out of it. You can keep it in the cooler on ice with the other drinks so it is cold.

We live in a HOT area, and I do not know if this will apply to you, but I also have a Kool Collar on Storm when she is on the beach (but not in the water), or we are walking in the heat. It is filled with ice, and s l o w l y melts over the dogs chest to keep it cool. It also comes with those freezer packs (THAT DO NOT MELT) in case the dog is somewhere where a wet coat wouldn't be appreciated. Like in bed with you, or on furniture.

Ice to chew on if the car ride is really warm. Toss it in the drinking water while at the beach to cool it. Storm actually has a bowl of ice at the end of the day. It is often the warmest here then with the sun's positioning it just beats off the sand, and onto the glass, cooking you.
Other frozen treats are good too.

Hose nozzle. A Power One - that attaches to the shower, or if they will let you use the hose with adjustable nozzle while you are there, that would work too. Sand is a pain to get out of fur. I take the hose to Storm with the power nozzle on it to blast sand from her coat (she loves it, and lays into it - making it nice & easy to do). I have done this since I got her so ease into it the first time, it makes a lot of noise.

VINEGAR A "must have" rinse if your Newf is going to be in the water a lot. Here, we all get SURFER'S Fungus on our skin - and dogs are not excluded. It is from not being dry long enough or completely.
When it is humid, the surfers (especially the ones like my son who never come out of the water) get this strange HONEYCOMB looking discoloration on their skin. The vinegar is the best combatant for that. EVen if you don't plan on daily blow drying, just dowse with the vinegar/water rinse and leave in for a while,or rinse out in an hour if you cannot take the smell.

EAR WASH & DRY BY VET'S BEST
This stuff is awesome! and great smelling with clove, tea tree, echinacea, aloe, etc. You can get it just about anywhere - even Petco I believe. It comes with both a wash, and an after Dry. Done with every swim, and never an ear problem!

Flip flops - NN but for you. UGLY but NECESSARY.
You are in and out soooo much at the beach, that they are all that works.
Walk out slip em on, and coming in flip them off. I resisted them for a long time, but have finally given in to the ugly but easy life!

BUG REPEL I am certain it would be different than here, but there must be some sort of local nuisance insect there waiting to bite your Newf.

BLINKING LIGHT COLLAR OR COLLAR ATTACHMENT
The beach has no lights on it other than those of the buildings (here anyway). It is VERY dark at night. All the dogs here are lit like Christmas trees. It is a wonderful site in the evening to see all of the flickering lights in different colors riding in on the waves, and running up and down the beach. It is also easier for the dog to be seen should it wander towards the street. It can be seen much much sooner. With no lights , you wouldn't see a dog until you were on top of it and the lights hit it's eyes.
It is easier to let your dog take a run on the beach when you can see exactly where he is if he romps too far ahead.

Conditioning sun screen if your dog is black - it will be red in a weeks time. Only if this bothers you. If not, just usual conditioner.

Pictures of your dog (in case he gets lost) that you can blow up at any local Kinkos or Staples store for flyers. I have seen tourists lose their dogs here, and have no pics to put on their flyers.

Lastly, the Hotel SHOULD have one,but you never know . . .
A Baby Gate for across your front door. I have noticed them on vacationer's doors here. They like to keep their doors open, and many have these gates up as a deterrent for the dog. I always think "What a neat idea" they don't have to give up any views or openness that way. Sort of makes me feel like I am on vacation too when I see them sitting and enjoying the day with their chips, snacks and drinks.
I don't know why. Just a neat memory thing I guess!

We hope you have a brilliant and relaxing vacation, and bring back lots of happy memories (and pictures!).:kgo_027:

September/October is the best times at the Jersey shore, the nights will be cool 50 to 60 & the days will be70 to 80 in sept, if you are right on the beach, the temp could always be no higher then the ocean water temp from the breezes, water temp in sept will be between 68-70, on LBI if you get a west wind the flies will be killer, bring skin so soft (Avon) or Banana boat deep tanning oil (works on flies). Weekends will be alittle crowded, but during the week you will have the beach to yourself, & the dogs!
