Bad Grooming!

The groomer cut off the fluff on the top of my newfie's head! Will it grow back???

She said she knew how to groom newfs and has several new clients.

How do I find out if a groomer REALLY knows how to groom a newfie?

Oh no! Poor Artie! This was my fear, as well. Did she do his paws correctly? My groomer was great, but she did "Scooby Doo" paws! Argh! Will have to make sure to let her know that cat paws are the thing. Otherwise, it was good. So sorry about your bad experience.

Please don't shoot me, but have to ask to be certain what I'm thinking is correct: what is "Scobby Doo" and what is "Cat Paws"?

A cat paw is round, and well covered with hair..but not shaggy. You do this by trimming all the excessive hair off the bottom of the foot, and then, with the dog standing..take a slicker brush and brush all the foot hair UP towards the leg. Trim off the hair that is above the regular hair growth ..ie..take off all that long crap from between the toes. If you want to make the feet look bigger and rounder..trim the stuff on the Front of the toes a bit shorter. There are lots of tips on everything on the NCA website. Different foot types are shown in the illustrated guide for the standard. A Newf should always have a "cat foot" type.
And trimming the floof off the top of the head ..anything that sticks up ABOVE the rest of the hair..is correct. But yes..it grows back.

They cut the hair off the top of his head. i thought you never cut newfie hair - just ears and wings. The ears are done well, btw. am i wrong?

If you mean hair that was sticking out above the normal hair on the head..yes..you cut that off. :) The head hair should be a uniform length, and give the impression of a nicely rounded skull, without flaggy areas of hair sticking up. (trimmed to be neat.) Now..I don't know what you mean...so if you mean they cut the hair all OVER his head..then no..that's not correct..but in the picture, it looks like his head hair is trimmed to be even...and that's correct. :) I don't know how much he had before, you know?
I think you might be confusing the concept of never shaving a newf down with the concept of not cutting the hair...there is PLENTY Of hair cut off a Newf that goes in the show ring...sometimes..in fact..excessive amounts. This website might help you figure it out :)

But rest assured..if they took hair you wanted..it will be BACK..with a vengeance..very soon! I personally don't like the long scraggly hair on top of the head..so I always take it off even if they are just hanging around at home.

He actually looks cute. How old is he? She may have been trimming the puppy fuzz from his head. If he is genetically predisposed to having a floofy head, then it will grow back. When grooming a newf, all the hair is trimmed, some areas more than others. Pups don't need that much grooming, just more neatening up. But as they grow, more is taken off in areas.

Yep, he looks very cute! Frankie has a weird floof thing going on now...as his head is growing the long floof is moving back. Like he has a headband on. Looks very goofy.

I cut a little off the other day, but more will be coming off soon. The front will eventually floof too, but right now it's shorter, so I'll be cutting to even it out.

Thank you all for being so reassuring. And yes, floof or not, he is absolutely adorable. Cindy - thanks for the weblink - very helpful! Artie is 7 months.

Here is the only recent pic i have pre-grooming. He is a bit wet, but you can see he has a lot more going on up top. Also, any tips for dealing with curls? Is that a drying technique issue or genetics?

I have two dogs that have straight coats, and two that have coats that will curl.....my K9-III dryer helps with the curly ones!

I wouldn't be insulting if i took the pictures to the groomer with me would it?Don't want it to appearr as if Im telling the groomer his/her job, just what I'd like my dog to look like.

I'm sorry you're not happy but I do think he looks cute. My Cooper has little/no floof and that's what his head looks like all the time. Zuzu, OTOH, has a Tina Turner 'do going on the top and I can't decide whether to trim or let it all hang out...

of course i think he is still adorable. i probably over-reacted, but i miss tousling that soft little mop and i hope it does not grow back thick and rough. but he is still the most handsome little guy ever!

Don't worry, it will grow back just like before. As for curls Gracie says not to worry, she has lived with her curls for over 11 yrs and everyone says how cute she is!!

Why would it be insulting? I used to do some grooming..and I was FAR happier if I knew what they WANTED instead of having to guess and see the stunned look on their face when the dog came out...because our concept of a "trim" might be really different!

It's YOUR dog. IF you can show them what you want..I'm sure they will be delighted.
