:):):) one of the last litters our breeder had from a maiden bitch was ten irish spotted healthy pups...........She was disappointed. She prefers solid color/landseer.
I did toy with the idea of another pup , but I decided not to :)

Abbey is the QUEEN of Back-talk! I wonder if it's a Irish Spotted thing, or just a spoiled girl thing!:lol::lol:
Katy does have two white toes on a rear foot and a white chest, wanna bee Irish Spotted.......But boy can she yabber and talk back. It goes on and on. Annabelle gives her "the look", probably meaning, "be quiet they might sell you" ..........Poor Annabelle always worries. I love the talking, so cute

It is still termed as a mismark by some out there. The standard does define the markings. You can have white on black dog and not have the irish gene. When I had 2 come out of a litter basically weren't sure it was sitting recessive in my girl. She has a few white markings and was possibly landseer recessive. Irish trumps landseer. My irish I hung onto talks back to me all the time but I think this is coming from his mom who does the same thing. That's ok though.

The white chest typically goes from chest underneath to tummy and can start at chin going down, white toe tips and white tail tip. The white recedes as they grow. Georg's white toe tips have receded as he's grown and so has Magnum's. The reason it's harder to show them, where the white shows up can create an illusion you may not want in the ring. It's easier to hide a fault on an all black.

The bottom line is what the judges like. Some do not like to put up a mismark over a nice black, although Jennifer Hansen's, Iz has done very well!!!

Both of my newfies came from the same litter... One is brown & one is black and they both have the exact same markings: white tips on the end of their tails, white that extends from their chests to their stomachs & white on their paws.

Would they be considered "irish spotted"?

I should mention - they are both VERY vocal... I swear, Titan has started speaking in full sentences with different tones, pitches, and voices. Its adorable.

Yep, Irish Spotted! I should add, The term IS is not exclusive to Newfs.

Maggie, our Irish Spotted, is a very sassy girl. She talks back, grumbles under her breath, SIGHS loudly, or just plain barks at us when she wants something. When we let her out to potty, she lies down and chews a stick, THEN when I've allowed enough time and call her back in, she gives me a look that says "But I haven't GONE yet!". What a girl.

Cute story...we took Maggie to a pet-friendly mall where there was a Build a Bear shop. A little girl and her mom were just coming out of the store and I heard her tell her mom, "See? I TOLD you they were real!". She was carrying a new stuffed black dog, with white feet, chest, and tail tip. Her mother said to us, "When she chose those markings, I told her there weren't real dogs like that."

Here are a few pics of Miss Maggie. Her markings are almost perfectly symmetrical, too.

This was Mags, stealing a new distributor cap that hubby had made the mistake of setting on the garage floor.....

One of Maggie, as a puppy, so you can see the white markings on her tummy:

Teri, I came here with the vague idea of looking into getting a newf, in part bc of annoyance at being lectured on not knowing what my dogs are. Figured the mood would pass, I'd beef up on information to remind me that my pups are lower-maintenance than are newfs, maybe glean additional advice, tips since the breeds are close.

Your Abbey and Zeke are largely to "blame" for me slipping into researching-breeders mode ... the most slippery of all slopes!

Now, will I be excommunicated if I start a thread on IS vs LS? ;)
