Apparently, I do need to keep two eyes on River!

Hi
We all went to the cottage last weekend, and had a terrific time swimming, playing and had a BBQ with all the fixins'. I just found out today, that our River helped herself to a cob of corn and swallowed the thing whole! She refunded her stolen treasure this afternoon at my feet, while we were in the kitchen. She wouldn't touch her food this morning but otherwise acted normal. Not eating is very strange for River. I spent today at home watching her carefully. I knew something was 'up' but I was surprised to see it was a cob of corn...knowing that Sunday was the only day we ate it. She must have bolted it down lickity-split. I always keep one eye on my son and one eye on River but I obviously missed this. Everyone is so good at not leaving food on the counter and our garbage is under the sink behind a door. No one in my family would dare feed my Newfs so I know she must have seen her opportunity and took it.
I realize of course, how bad this could have turned out if she had choked on it or if it became an obstruction somewhere in her digestive track....arrgghhhh. Once she threw up I could tell she was feeling better and slept the rest of the afternoon. She is doing very well now, and even ate some boiled rice and salmon for supper (demolished it in 3 seconds). Also, I made some banana bread and she gave me the 'eyes' until I fed her a little. I am so relieved she is back to old herself.
You never know when a little thing is going to turn into a big thing and your whole life will change. Do you know what I mean?
Anyhow, River is snoring down by my feet as I type from my kitchen table. I think I'll pass on the corn in the future.

Thank God it didn't cause a problem. They sure can be very quick and sneaky at times, especially when it comes to food.

Thank God she barfed it up! Corn cobs can kill a dog as you seem aware. I know how quick it can happen though. Gabriel swallowed one a couple of years ago. It took about six months for me to get it back....They never digest...

Yes you are VERY lucky. Snuffles' niece Skye in MI just had emergency surgery with complications when Skye ate a cob unknown to anyone. They think a squirrel or some other critter brought it into the area since they had not had corn. So happy your pup had no real problem.

Thank Goodness! What a scamp she is. Sounds like you aren't quite over the shock of dodging disaster - I completely understand. She is your precious girlie love.

I'm glad to hear it wasn't anything more serious! My Irish Setter has done that with cooked chicken bones, swipes them off the counter in a split second. Scary.
