Aollie Rolls

I've been catching up on NN reading and have seen several mentions of alpha roll. I thought alpha rolls should never be used on an animal as it serves no purpose (even alpha dogs don't roll and pin down another dog). Also, isn't it especially dangerous with a very large dog with very big teeth? Just sounds like more trouble than it's worth, IMHO.

What are your thoughts?

I don't use it. Some people have success with it but I haven't bought in to the dominate and conquer philosophy. I don't use purely positive methods of training but it is my first line of technique before resorting to corrective measures. I know shutzhund folks that swear by it. With a big strong dog, you may be asking for trouble with this move.

Who wants to dominate their dog? It's much more fun to win them over with techniques that stimulate their brains and watch them when the "I got it!" light goes on.

I know that I am the wrong kind of person to do it. I don't think I could do it, especially on such a big dog, without some amount of fear in my heart. And I think the dog would know it was there, and it wouldn't work. When we had great dane rescue with fear aggression towards kids, someone suggested something along these lines to me. And I knew I couldn't do.

In Alpha roll the dogs think there is a possibility it is going to die.......So if you do it to the wrong dog the reaction could be terrible and you could be off worse.

It can also destroy any faith the dog has in you......And so many people use it on dogs that are not to the stage where they should be dominated. Most dogs that are aggressive are actually fearful and it would make them even more so and have even less trust

An Alpha roll should really never be used by most people. The only time I feel it has some credence is when the dog is so aggressive ( not fearful at all) that it need to think that maybe it might die if it continuous to do what it is doing. I have seen it used once where it was used as a last resort, by a very experienced trainer/behaviorist, with excellent timing and strength. The dog he used it on was a very dog aggressive and people aggressive dog and it was in attack mode to another dog......this dog initially fought back and if he had not been who he was, the person doing the roll might have been injured.
She wanted to kill him too........This was a truly aggressive dog, no fear at all

No it should not be used as it is used by still so many. I hate it. By the time it comes into the picture it is too late for most dogs.

This is how many trainers feel now....of course there are still some who advocate it.

Dogs never roll other dogs to just show their strength.....the other dog rolls by choice in front of a dog who they feel is their leader. In a true dominance fight it might happen, but by then it might be fatal for the dog rolled, hence most dogs would fight back if they are of a strong personality to prevent being killed.

I know this is pushing the topic somewhat, but do you think when Suki rolls over and offers us her belly she is doing it because she wants us to come and play with her or because she is wanting to show submission? She does it with everyone in our family and then we shower her with belly rubs. And she simply offers it, it never happens in a situation where she is being corrected. We'll be petting her and she'll slide down and roll over. Or if I am busy and not petting her and she wants attention, she'll roll over playfully and make complaint sounds like "hey, I'm over here and I'm so cute, why don't you stop cooking dinner and play with me?!?!"

Don't use it. As R Taft said it is a last resort item, and by someone who knows what their doing.
