Anal Gland Surgery

Tula is scheduled to have hers' removed Tuesday surgically. Does anyone else have experience with this type of surgery. We've been having them expressed and flushed every four weeks - but still become infected. Thanks for any advice. Tula's worried Mom, Kim

Just make sure you have a really good, experienced surgeon, as they have to be extremely careful not to damage the area or the dog will leak after.

My late Annie had both removed for the same reasons as yours. They removed one and two weeks later the other was removed. She was fine after that. No more problems.

Thank you. I did speak with the surgeon and he has a high success rate. I hope this solves the problem. Kim and Tula

A client of mine had been going through this with her Shih Tzu for years and recently it got really bad and the vet suggested surgery. I suggested she try holistic as I did with my Maltipoo (Sugar) who was not a candidate for surgery as her blood didn't clot and her anal glands were totally blocked and could not be expressed. I looked up holistic treatment for blocked anal glands in dogs and I purchased this from a regular health food store. Hepar Sulph Phostphate and Silicia. It completely unblocked my Sugar's anal glands and so I sent this info to my client who sent it to her vet and her vet told her that it couldn't hurt her dog. It is now over 2 months since she has tried it on her dog and her dog hasn't had to have his anal glands expressed.

That's even better! Certainly worth a shot! Annie went through her anal gland surgery back in 1993. I didn't even know what an holistic vet was.

Sue I had to find something and quickly for my Sugar as surgery was not an option. Too I read that a blocked anal gland in dogs is so painful that they can actually go into seizures from it. I know all about bowel problems (having IBS myself) so I went on-line and found an anal gland kit for dogs. I saw that it had only two products in it and so I then went to the health food store and found both products (the ones for humans). Sugar was fine for a year and I treated her for only 1 month. Unfortunately I lost my Sugar this past Dec. but not from an anal gland problem. I always check out holistic first. Also I was very impressed that my client's vet agreed to it as most vets don't. We have only one holistic vet here in our city that I know of. These meds are not used forever. I used it for a month then stopped and a year later when I noticed Sugar starting the scooting again I put her back on. My client is thrilled to have saved herself over $2,000 for anal gland surgery. I will get the website now and post it here.
