Almost SCAMMED

As some of you know, we are looking to add another Newf to the family, I came across an ad for a puppy that appeared to be within 4 hours of here, but no price listed, just needed to be adopted to a good home. So I figured we were and contacted the lister. I got the story of how he has to leave the country and is just looking for a home for the now 2 puppies, and now he is in Northern Ontario. I asked some basic questions and he sends me new photos of the puppies and the father, and requests alot of personal information from me. He states he can ship the puppies for 430.00 and will as soon as he has the cash....ummmm. He also attaches the photos and I find the exact same photos on Puppyfinder.com. Needless to say I sent him NO information on me or any CASH, but I cannot post that he is a scammer on the website. What some people will do to suck money out of you. Got to be patient, our dog will come, one day, if only I lived in Colorado, I could have Truman or Charlie from Rocky Mountain Newf Rescue. SIgh :cussing2:

Happened to a guy I worked with for an English Bulldog. He DID fall for it.

Go find yourself a breeder (or five), talk to them, go to their website, talk to others about them, look up their clearances, etc.

It takes time...be patient! Your Newf will come.

Thankx, I'm glad I'm a little suspicious, but I feel foolish on the same hand. I have always believed "if it sounds to good to be true, look twice". My last 3 Newf's have come from excellent breeders, two were Topmast lineage, and all were puppies when we got them, I just have it in my mind that an adult rescue or re-home is what I want this time, especially after reading about all the wonderful rescues that have happened here, that has solidified it in my heart. 'Patience may be a virtue, but I have never been a virtuous woman' LOL

Talk to breeders about a retiree. Go to the sites and see if they have any adults they want to rehome now that they're retired from showing/breeding...or may not have fit into their breeding program for some reason or another.

If you got your dogs from Topmast...have you talked to Marg?

No I haven't Morgan and Daisy-Mae were Pied Piper grandchildren out of Brindybrooks Kennel, Brindybrooks Abbey and I believe Topmasts Justin, but I have spoken to Tubby Miller,he has us on the rescue list, we were in obedience trials and training with him many years ago and Pipelinelizzy has us on their list too. (We named our Piper after Pied Piper.) Patience right?

Can I ask where this ad was posted? Just wondering, we live in Calgary and I usually keep a close eye for newfs on Kijiji...thanks for the heads up!

No it wasn't Kijiji, but I had sooo many windows open that day, I will have to look for it again. There was a 1 yr old black, n. in Mcgrath for 800.00 that I missed out on that had been posted on Kijiji. For some reason he had been posted since the 16 of May and even though I was looking I missed out and by the time I found it he was being p/u that day. Damn.

Check with the rescue groups in your area. Many rescues are full-to-overflowing and need to find homes for the dogs. Not all rescued newfs are perfect for all homes, though, so be sure to tell them about the animals you already have, their temperaments, etc, and what you're looking for in your next newf, so they can try to place the right one with you.

Good luck!

Please try and be patient, your newf is out there! I would strongly caution about thinking of buying a newf off of those types of sites. There is a good chance they are from BYBs and supporting these people by buying a Newf from them just keeps the cycle going. Like others have mentioned, rescue and reputable breeders is where I would be keeping the search. I know it can seem really hard to pass on dogs on those types of sites that you want to help, but I really do believe that supporting these people just makes them do it again and again. If they can get $800 for a dog, they will just keep doing it.

BYB, puppy mills, puppy brokers, and scammers use these sites.... I don't look at them anymore.

I good choice would be to contact some breeders... you might get a retired dog ... very good option.

Just to clarify, I do not condone BYB in any way and would never buy a puppy from anywhere but a reputable breeder, and as you have demonstrated, these types of sites are definitely buyer beware. However, if you are looking for an older rescue, there are many people out there who do not think to contact newf rescue organizations and I often see dogs from farm/working backgrounds listed on the site. The other day I came across someone looking to sell or TRADE a beautiful male newf....these are the guys I feel really sorry for!!
If you are in Didsbury there are a few breeders in your area that I had contacted when looking for a breeder for our pup:
Adora Kennel in Lacombe (these guys I believe have a litter on the ground now...)
Seek 'N Water Newfoundlands in Innisfail
Titan Bear in Edmonton
If you are willing to travel a little further we went with Mostabear in BC and have been very happy so far.
Good luck with your search, be patient and you will have another baby before you know it!
