3rd UTI??

Good morning,

My female newf, Ella, 7 month old, has been treated twice-in-a-row for UTI. First course was a 10-day antibiotic, then about 5 days later she was on a 14-day antibiotics. While on medication she is fine, no symptoms. Both times they did a urinalysis to determine UTI. now, it has been around 3 days off her meds from the last UTI, and she is getting the symptoms again.. getting up at night to go pee, and then peeing and peeing and peeing, but I can't actually see any pee coming out of her. It's night right now though. She probably pee'd some, I'm not sure. I don't think its blocked by stones.

Can A UTI develop so quickly after being on antibiotics? She was on AventiCLAV 375mg. Anyone used this before? or had UTI's with their Newf?

I don't get how she would have symptoms so quickly of a UTI.. this is like a repeat of last time and I feel like she will be on antibiotics and vet visits her whole life.

I'd have her checked for Cystinuria just to be safe.

Symptoms of Cystinuria
You will not be able to tell if your dog has cystinuria just by looking at it. Many times the first sign pointing to cystinuria is a urinary tract blockage caused by a bladder stone. The analysis of a bladder stone in a cystinuria dog will be composed almost entirely of the amino acid cystine. Symptoms of a blocked urinary tract include:
frequent urination
small amount of urine when going
blood in urine
urine flow interrupted
If your dog exhibits any of these signs contact your local veterinarian immediately as a blocked urinary tract can be fatal with no treatment. In some cases reoccurring urinary tract disorders may be a sign of cystinuria. And in all cases dogs with cystinuria will have cystine in their urine which can be seen in a urinalysis. - See more at: http://www.akcchf.org/canine-health...=https://www.google.com/#sthash.OoAVW1cD.dpuf
I have heard that cranberry tablets will help with frequent UTIs.

Have they done a culture to determine what bacteria is causing the UTI's? If not, the clavamox is probably not the right antibiotic, hence it keeps returning. I would also keep her on the meds longer then 10 days.

Definitely need it cultured to see if it's the right antibiotic. And you may need a longer course of it too. Cranberry tabs help. You can get the human ones. My guys get one, twice a day.

As others said, culture the urine to ensure she is on the right antibiotic. After the antibiotics are finished, do a repeat UA to ensure the infection is gone.

I'd guess whatever she has is resistant to that particular drug. She may need a longer course of a different antibiotic to take care of it.

My second Newf was a male who had chronic UTIs. One of the vet techs at his vet's office suggested changing his food. Believe it or not, that cleared it right up. Something about the change in chemistry in his urine, I guess.

Thanks guys. Will have to look in to doing a culture test. She seemed normal today all day, believe it or not. Last night she circled for like 10 mins peeing like 20 times. didnt see anything come out for the last like 19 times. lol. We will see how tonight goes. She has not done that today, drinking and peeing normally. any ideas what it could be now?? I will still be worried about UTI but maybe it is not. might just do UA tomorrow to see if its gone and if so then i'd look at different problems..

Recurrence is probably due to the wrong antibiotic or one mildly effective on the bacteria and not treated for a sufficient amount of time. Cultures to determine the right antibiotic have to be done on a sterile sample which requires a needle stick through the abdomen. I've had girls treated for 3 - 4 weeks and then always re-culture about a week after the AB is done to be sure the infection is cleared.

*******Don't let the vet put a 7 month old on Baytril. It has been shown to cause joint damage in large breeds.*********

I've also had girls pee like crazy when in heat when no infection has been present.

Another strong vote for culturing. I wasted so much time and money treating my Keira with what turned out to be the wrong antibiotic. Don't listen to "Well the majority of UTIs are successfully treated with this antibiotic." If it's not the right one, it's not going to work!

Thanks so much for your help guys!! Turned out it wasn't a 3rd UTI. Unfortunately I don't know what it was, but it has never happened since. Perhaps it was dehydration, or constipation that made her feel like to pee?? i dont know. So, so far only the one UTI, which wasn't all cleared up after the 1st course of antibiotics, but is all cleared up after the 2nd. Fingers crossed I won't have more UTI's. Just waiting untill her first heat or 2 to see if reversed vulva will clear up. no signs of heat yet at ~8 months.
