Zacc is sick...

My almost five year old Zacc woke us up this morning at 4am with uncontrollable diahrea. He was trying to get outside but it was coming even as he was trying to run to the door. He had another episode at 7am.

I called the vet first thing this morning and he told me to give him 6mg of Loperomide HCI every 4-6 hours and let go most of the day without food. The doctor said that after 5pm we could give him some boiled chicken and rice and to give him a call tomorrow.

He spent most of the day sleeping but has made a few mad dashes out the dogie door although he has been able to "hold the gusher" until he was outside.

I bought skinless boneless chicken breast and rice and boiled them both, I am letting them cool now. I also gave him 2 tablespoons of pumpkin earlier as the vet said it would soothe his stomach.

My question is how much chicken and rice do I give him? And what is the correct ratio of chicken to rice? He is about 165lbs.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I wouldn't give him any food until tomorrow at the earliest. And that's ONLY if his diarrhea settles down.

His system is already irritated and food will make it worse.

Just give him broth...and lots of water. Don't want him to dehydrate. Don't start any food until you know the diarrhea has stopped for several hours then only try a very little at a time.

No treats either. I hope he's feeling better soon. No temp? No vomiting? If so I'd get him right to a Vet.

I am no expert but when my guys get the runs/stomach upset I do 24 hrs no food except for ice cubes and fluids, than I do hamburger and rice, but a lot of people do chicken?? Hope he feels better soon.....

People do chicken because it's bland. I do beef too (hamburger) because it's easier to digest.

Either way.....NO grease...NO skin...throw the water out if you boiled the chicken with skin in it. Use regular chicken broth, ice cubes, water, anything clear liquid.

Agree with Donna - fast for at least 24 hrs. Feeding him just adds fuel to the fire. And I'd start just with plain white rice to which you could add some of the chicken broth. Keep the chicken for after you've fed him a couple of times with just rice. I'd start small, maybe a cup of boiled rice with chicken broth & see how he tolerates that. You could feed an extra time if he's doing OK on the rice. I'd mix about 1/2 a chicken breast to about 1.5 cups of rice. Don't want to give too much protein to begin with, but then increase. I'd feed just rice for a day & then add chicken the next. I'm very cautious tho'. Make sure the poor guy is drinking. Give him a hug from NN'ers.

When you start him back up on food, I would recommend a 50/50 combo, chix breasts boiled and white rice sieved, and hot water sprayed over the meats to insure you get rid of the fats. I usually don't do any supps, except for what meds he really needs.

I assumed the chicken breasts were de-skinned before cooking. Definitely avoid fat. I'm just giving you the regimen I use with my dogs.

Are there any other symptoms? You need to be sure he doesn't have an obstruction blocking the intestines or still in the stomache. If he's not better in the morning, suggest you see the vet.

Yep agree on the nothing for 24hrs, then half cup chicken and 1 cup of rice (long grain is best).... he shouldnt POOP for a bit and it should be almost a yellowish colour... hope he gets better soon....

To be safe, I'd take in a fresh stool sample to check for ova and parasites if he hasn't been checked in a while. I think my vet sends me reminders to check once a year anyhow.

Hope our buddy is feeling better today. Just a thought this morning as I got a FB message from my nephews Chow :D who had the same symptoms last week. Turned out to be Giardia.

Zacc is doing better today although he still has the runs, but nothing like the other night. He seems a bit lathargic today but I figure that could be because he hasn't eaten; he still has no fever. I just called the vet and he said to continue with the anti-diarhea meds and the pumpkin unless he develops a fever and/or vomitting then I need to bring him in.

So I will monitor him very close today and hope things get better. Thanks for all the advice and concern. I appreciate it.

Make SURE he's drinking...give him broth or something. Ice cubes, etc. All that diarrhea will make him dehydrated and you do not want that. That'll make him lethargic and will make him more sick. He might need fluids from the Vet. Especially if he hasn't eaten anything and STILL has diarrhea. If he keeps being draggy INSIST they see him ASAP.
