X-ray for hip dysplasia

Hello everyone,

here in Croatia there are some different opinions whether is necessary for a dog to be sedated during x-raying hips for a hip dysplasia.

What are your experiences in USA and other countries?

So, can x-rays be correct if it was taken without a sedation of a dog?

Thank you for your answers!

One just layed on the table for the x-ray with no sedation but the other one was very upset and had to be sedated for the xray. Neither dog had any lasting problems from the experience. I guess it just depends on the dog.

My vet said that they would try to get the xrays without sedation and if Eloise wouldn't stay still, then they'd have to sedate her. They were able to get the xrays without sedation though, which I was glad of.

I have never had sedation for the 5 dogs I have had xrayed, 2 were done in the States and 3 were done here.
There is a vet in town who does not give sedation and many people take their dogs to him just for xrays.

My vet insists on sedation as they think any movement will give an inaccurate picture. All the vets in this area do the same but I find it interesting that some vets don't require sedation. Although I would rather not sedate my dog, I feel that if I am going to go through the whole expense and procedure, as well as my dog, then I should get the best possible films I can.

Penn HIP requires sedation. They manipulate the hips in more unnatural positions than are required for OFA.

I've never had a Vet who can/will xray for OFA without sedation, but I've read on here that some can, and do an excellent job.

I wish there was someone around here like that.

For non-OFA x-rays my vet will do without sedation if the dog is cooperative. For OFA he does sedation to get the positioning correct.
