Worried about weight loss

Brinkley had his "man surgery" today , he turned a year in August. he is doing very well. My concern was not so much the snip but over his weight loss. For the past couple of months Brinkley was not eating as well as he should. We tried everything, , Orijen, Wellness, Eagle Pack. you name I think we tried it. Bryanna is on Eagle Pack (Holistic Select) and they do great.

We took Brinkley for check ups and they checked for all the parasites and worms, everything was negative. They did blood work on his liver and kidneys, still okay. We have several vet checks and they all seemed to think that a lot of it "may" be the overactive hormones. Thus we elected to move forward with the snip. Vets gave him more test for parasites , still negative. So they put him on panacur and several medications , in the event that there is an intestinal infection going on.

They want to give him a couple of weeks after the surgery and if he still continues to lose weight they want to start a series of other blood work.

This of course has me extremely worried , as you can see from the picts of him how lean he has become just in the last month.

Has anyone else had this issue with a one year old male? your thoughts would be appreciated.

Interesting re the hormones. I have an intact 3 yo male and have had a devil of a time keeping weight on him. Have wondered about hormones playing a part.

Does he seem not hungry? Or are foods not agreeing with him? Cooper is hungry, but can't eat more than 2.5 cups of kibble at a time, otherwise he regurges it. I added a 1 c lunch to his 2 meals of 2.5 morning and evening and that has seemed to help, some.

I also added nzymes probiotics, per recommendations of folks here. He's only been on them for a short time so I'm not sure if they'll help or not.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, and I hope he's feeling OK after his surgery.

You might consider trying a home-made diet, cooked or raw. Walter would not put on a pound on kibble, and he was 90 lbs. at 2 years old when I adopted him. Not a good look for a Saint! We tried different kibbles for 6 months, everything from Iams to Wellness CORE, and at huge amounts too. His stool was fine, his body just couldn't process the calories I suppose. We switched him to a raw diet and he put on 30 lbs. of muscle in a few months, his shoulders caught up the 3 inches to meet the height of his butt, and the rest is history :)

I would also try the home diet....Annabelle was very thin when we got her. We feed mainly RAW and quite a lot of grains/veg.
Initially when we tried to put the weight on her we cooked a veg/oats/rice mix, which she loved and she gained her missing 40lbs quite quickly. the veg were mainly pumpkin, carrot peas and beans, but we grow our own, so a lot of other stuff is thrown in. We fed that in the morning and meats/bones in the evening.
I hope all is well with Brinkley, Ronnie

thanks so much for the input, you guys are so great to help. I will definitely take your advice.

He does get the fresh veggies and meats and grains but have not made it to the raw yet. He is a very active young man so with the ideas you guys have given and the surgery, I hope he can regain his lost weight without the fear of medical issues.

Friends of mine adopted a sickly newf when he was around 18 months old. He has huge, huge allergy issue when it comes to food, and they finally put him on a raw diet, and he is perfectly healthy and normal now :) He was extremely underweight and is small for a male newf (118 lbs and short). He is allergic to wheat and chicken, and a few other things I cannot recall, so they have him on a fish diet of sorts, and he is a much healthier and happier dog :)

we are definitely making a batch of satin balls this weekend. I guess what scares me the worse is that since the first day we saw him at 9 wks old he has always been a chunky , muscled little fellow, then by the time he was 10 months old he was a chunky big fellow, in the last 5-6 wks he suddenly dropped about 17lbs. He is very active but that was just too much down too quick . And mama is worried sick.

thanks so much you guys, please keep my sweet boy in your prayers while we figure this out.

17 lbs weight loss at that age is a huge loss...he shouldn't be losing at all..so yeah, if you are not starting to get a gain..I'd be looking further for a malabsorption syndrome or something.
