Wine Racks

My husband and I collect and drink a lot of wine. We are currently looking at several different style wine racks to replace our current one that we have definitely outgrown. I've been online and in showrooms. Do any of you have any great wine racks or great ideas for storing wine? If you do, I'd love to see them.

Thanks

I wish I had known you 5 years ago! I worked for a very popular fancy restaurant as a bookkeeper for many years, and they had the most beautiful wine rack that was 8' x 6' and made out of mahogany. It was specially built-in in the 1940's. Anyway, when they closed the owners gave it to me and I had no room for it and finally gave it away a few years ago.
Maybe thats an idea..contact some long lived restaurants. Wine is not as big as it was 50 years ago (people are so unrefined!) and I know alot of these things get stashed in their basements. Good Luck!

Leslie, I will try to dig up a picture for you but we had the same problem. I finally took the door off the coat closet and had an electrician install a cooling system and low lights that are actually in the garage, but vent the closet. Then I had iron guy custom make us an iron door for the closet opening. I ordered rack from a restaurant supply place and put it together myself and stained it mahogany. I'll take some pictures and try to post it.

Go to a Restaurant Supply or Bar Supply company.. they have many wine racks and they come in all sizes. they are strong and will cost less than anyplace else.. to bad you don\t live in New York.. shopping the restaurant supply companies down in the Bowery is really worthwhile.

HHMMM....I vote that you hire Guy Germaine to make one for you that we can all ooh and aahh over!
Heck, it could even have a Newfie inlayed!

Okay, you knew I'd have to get the Newfie included!

Um...Susan....why do you think I posted here....:lol

No, seriously. We have restaurant supply stores here but those racks are not pretty. Because of its location, it has to become part of our living space. Big wire racks really don't seem to go with my crown molding. Now, if someone has an idea on how to dress one of those up, please share. I have no creative bones in my body. NONE.

Did you check out the Howard Miller wine cabinet collection? I think Wine Enthusiast and Wine Cellar carries his stuff too. I like the that with some of them, you can pick and choose your own configurations, bases, upper cabinets and make a modular unit out of them, to suit your needs, as much or as little bottle, glass or accessory storage as you need. I think Pottery Barn has something similar too, but not as much selection. I like that they are actual pieces of furniture, not the generic wine rack look.

I went to Ikea and bought one of their basic Gorm units and put in the bottle rack/shelves. Each shelf holds six bottles, and each unit holds 84. It ain't pretty, but it works.
