Whining and crying over a bone and won't eat it ... any ideas why?

I bought Fergus one of these yesterday, it was 12" long and beef flavoured. He loved it, and went to town on it voraciously for quite some time. After a spell he stopped chewing, circled around it, paced about and started whining and carrying on. The amount of dramatics is unbelievable and we don't understand why.

We have given him treats in the past and he hasn't done this. I put it away for a bit but he wouldn't let it alone and went on a wild rampage trying to find it again. I gave it back to him, but he'd just stomp around carrying it in his mouth and fussing. I wish he'd just sit down and enjoy it?

I don't give mine rawhides....but looking at that...it's quite possible that he chomped it and got lip or tongue caught in the braid and it pinched and he's now nervous of it...wanting it..but a little afraid of it.

Yes, I think you nailed it there! I didn't know rawhides were bad especially these braided ones - I won't give him anymore of these that's for sure. I thought if it was from a froo froo dog bakery it would be ok for him. :)

Some dogs do fine with rawhides..mine tend to just "eat" them instead of using them as a chew...taking off chunks..so I just don't use them. It depends on the dog. But with Newfs having the powerful jaws they do..I can see them biting that hard enough to spread the braid enough to get pinched. And that would cause the reaction you are seeing :)

Interesting! I never did the braided ones, NS Snuffles is more a chewer than a eater. But when I do see him rip a piece off, I do throw it away.

I just found these pressed rawhide disks at like 39 cents a piece. They are kind of like Quaker Oats Rice cakes. The turn into a bunch of small pieces when he bites in to it, So the pieces of rawhide ingested are small.

Zeke will do this. He's done for now, but wants to save it. He'll carry it around the house looking for a place to hide it. He get's sooooo stressed out over it we have to take it totally away! It's funny watching him try to bury it in the corner, pushing on it with his nose.....while Abbey and Theona look on. You know the other dogs are thinking, "What A Whacko"!

Try Bully Sticks instead. They are "Biodegradable (LOL)". I don't feed mine Rawhides. I once had a dog get one all soft then she got it caught in ther throad and could not breathe. Fortunately I was there and managed to reach down her throat and get it out (Thank Dog!). Scared the CRXP out of me. Never been another rawhide in the house since.

Can you get those online? I've just been giving him raw bones up to now, but I like the idea of a rawhide because it is a bit cleaner for him to eat it indoors (gives him something to do inside other than horsing around).

Hmm that's a great idea! I'll see if I can find some of these around! I did find antlers today, but it was sooo expensive. Growing up in a rural area, I can't fathom paying $30 for a chunk of antler, outrageous.

Mine don't like antlers..but a lot of dogs do, and they last a LONG time. If you know someone who hunts, however...antlers are CHEAP that way..but very hard to cut.
Working in a vet clinic turned me off rawhides anyway...too many times...removing them the hard way..through an incision. I guess I'm just not a good enough "supervisor" with my dogs to take that chance.

When I give an antler..my dogs look at it and go..um...where is the DEER to go with this? We eat DEER..not antler!

Our Molly hardley ever eats treats when we give them to her. She instead hides them all over the house. She has stashes everywhere. She wants the treats but then hides them instead. Then out of the blue she find one and eat it but only after it has "aged" in its hiding spot.

Hahaha, I think I know this look - I got it the other day when I gave him the dry crust end off my pizza slice! Made me feel like I ripped him off or something.

I don't give rawhides either since many years ago I had to put my hand down two of my Goldens throats and retrieve the piece they were choking on.

You could try bully sticks or raw bones from the butcher. I give either the big knuckle bones or the 5" long shank bones and scoop out the marrow (so they won't get diarrhea). They'll chew and chew those things, but I do take them away after a bit, rinse them off, put them in a baggie and refrigerate for next time.

If the shanks start getting sharp pieces, I throw them away.

When Poppy was younger, the pet store near us gave her a pig's ear. She loved it. Then she had diarrhea all over the lawn for the next day. No more of those. Rawhides do the same thing. I give those smoked bones that you get at the pet store, with the stuff baked on. She loves them, they are cleaner than raw (my house thanks me!) and readily available. The brand is Merrick, I think. I get the Sarge. Be careful to take out the loose stuff, though. Poppy will choke on it. So I take all the loose giblet-y things and just give her the bone.

As for the whiny noise, I Think it is excitement. She has a stuffed snake that has squeakers in every segment. She cannot chew it without it making this god-awful squeak. She wants to play with the snake, but she will chew, then circle, then whine, etc.

Gosh, I do not know, but most likely EVERYTHING is available on line it seems. I just happen to go in the store where I get Snuffles food, and saw them. I bought one, he enjoyed it and no ill affects, so a friend was going to that city where the store is (60 miles) and got me a bunch more. No brand or anything on it.

When I saw the price, I asked my hunter neighbor if he had a rack he did not plan on mounting. So I cut it up. And just last weekend, I was walking by a neighbor who died a few weeks ago, and his widow had put out a mounted rack. So I am set.

Snuffles doesn't really chew it up, but I gave a piece to my next door neighbor's grandson's pit bull, and she was doing a job on it Christmas day. So I gave him another piece to take back to CT for Diggs to chew up. :)

If he is still complaining check to be sure he didn't break a tooth.....Otherwise he could have bit his mouth/tongue as mentioned above.
My local farm store has the round pressed rawhide treats I think Leonard is talking about...Next time I am there I will see what they are called and who makes them.....

I was told never to give rawhides to my pup. I think my vet told me this. We just have marrow bones laying around and now was told to watch out for those to incase of her chipping her teeth. I will be on the look out for bully sticks. Where can I find those?
