Where do I get a cart and harness for Poppy? And is there a way to "try" it to see if she could take to it? Can you make your own cart?

I have questions!

Gary use to build carts to sell. Since he no longer does this we have drawn detailed plans on building your own cart. They are for the cart on this page with the red sideboards.

PM me if you are interested in a copy as the email listed on that page is no longer valid.

I got my cart here: www.dogworks.com
And my harness here: http://www.wilczekwoodworks.com

Love both of these places! Great customer service and quality equipment.

The best way to see if she'll enjoy it before spending hundreds of dollars is to try to find your regional club and borrow some of their equipment. I started by just buying harness, and then gradually working his way up to pull a cart. We tried out two of friends carts first and I was able to see which one he maneuvered best. First it was some milk bottles, then a bit heavier etc. He took to it immediately, my best advice is to make it fun! As with all training, don't force it and enjoy it together.

We made our carts. The one we used for the draft test is just a milk crate with wheels. It is nice and narrow for our fine-boned girl and she was able to easily maneuver it.
But the carts from dogworks and wilczek are GREAT if you don't want to attempt your own.
Ebony took to draft very naturally, but my Berner is quite nervous about it all. All dogs are different, but hopefully you can find a club to help you out.

Thank you all very much. Jeanne, those carts are SO cute. I will definitely be PMing you! My husband was thinking he could make one, but then, he always thinks that. I am still waiting for my banquette table in the kitchen, that he said he could make... five years ago! So.

WE built our cart and all 3 harnesses are modified Siwash from Wilczek Woodworks http://www.wilczekwoodworks.com/

They have BEAUTIFUL carts as well but quite expensive. I know a number of Berner people who have used this collapsible cart as a starter to see if their dogs would take to carting. I think you can teach any dog to cart so really wouldn't worry too much if your dog will be able to do it. http://www.allthingsbiothane.com/CCC.htm

It's not too expensive and is easy to transport.

I got my freight harness for Juno from Nordkyn too. Nice folks to deal with....quality piece.

However, they don't include directions on how to convince your Newf to "jump" into the harness like they are putting on a t-shirt. THAT took some convincing of the dog and foul language by the handler (ME !!) ........ :devil3:

Hi Katie,
What do you know about this cart? We have both a sulky and a cargo cart for Tiika but we really would like something smaller and more compact to take to the Nationals. Why is this a cart just as a starter? Are there any disadvantages to this cart for draft trials?

I've seen it used in draft trials. They sell them at Berner Nationals and I know a lot of Berner people who have them and use them. I think the reason they say starter is that they can easily carry the weight needed for the novice Berner title, but for the advanced title the dogs pull their body weight and this cart can't carry 100-130 pounds or 200 to 260 for a brace team. So if you are going to get all the draft titles offered for Berners you'll need a different cart eventually. But for a newf test it would be fine since they don't pull much weight.

But I've seen it used in tests, parades, at home for around the h ouse work etc and it holds up just fine. Plus can fold it up and transport it much easier. I know the Canadian tests are a bit different as far as your freight so not sure how that would work, but for an American Newf Test it would be perfectly appropriate.

Thanks, Katie! The DDX weight in Canada is 60pounds but it could be anything - a tent, a chair, logs, pumpkins, fire wood! And, you don't know until the day of the test what you have to load.

I have cart from wilzcek, one of the custom carts, mid-size cart. I have an old dog works small cart plus I have trainer carts. Over the long haul if you're going to stay involved with carting get something that converts to team, that can go from single to team.

And is also stable. :( I have an old cart that got modified that I still use as starter cart and single. We moved the 16" wheels out on it to stop turnover. If it's too narrow taking a hill can turn over.

Milk crate carts are great as trainers and single draft. They won't do a lot of weight depending on the axle that's on them. 1/2" axles won't take lots of weight and usually see smaller axles. Use them a lot. Got to go up to 5/8" steel axle when carrying more weight.

I have one mid-size cart from wilczek that converts to team. The bigger competition cart I got rid of. Taking it in and out of vehicle when it's only me was a pain. The mid-size works perfect.

Some things to consider.

I have 2 carts from all things bright and biothane and i love them! With just a small car i had to find something that i could transport easily. Its made it through 2 canadian draft tests, one american and lots of parades. I love it!

I got my harnesses from Dog Works, i also like the Wilczek harness.

The downfall: i worry about the Canadian DDX - i dont know if the load will fit in this cart, depending on what it is. Also, i have a brace adapter that works great. But again, for BDD and BDDX you never know what the load is and it might be too big for the cart!

I would prefer a dog works cart for BDD...
