When is the shed over?

I've been using an undercoat rake to remove dull/dead hair from my Bernese Mountain Dogs. With my old male, I haven't been getting much hair out now that his dull undercoat has been removed. However, with my young female, I can continue to rake out coat by the bunches. However, it is no longer the dry/dull coat, it is dark in color.

Is this a clue that the shed is over and I should quit using the rake and just brush as normal? Or should I continue to rake as long as coat is coming out? I felt like I could have continued to rake out hair until she became a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.

It's NEVER over....LOL..... I use a commercial blower which really helps get the hair out, then use the good 'ol Mars Coat King.....

If it's the darker hair, that is the guard hair and although you will still get some shedding, it shouldn't be massive once the dull undercoat is out.

Are you using a Mars Coat King? The MCK will start to take out guard hair after the undercoat is out and you should stop using it after that.

Yes it is Never over for newfs, but their is a definite difference between the undercoat and guard hairs, I just brush once the undercoat is out.
But I have found i do not get much undercoat since I have only one newf and brush a minimum of every second day.........
