When are they "seniors"?

I was looking at Solo today. It's his second day. You know - the first day: When you bring them home. Second day - when you notice they've grown up/older. :sniffle:

But I was curious. At what age are these guys considered "senior"? (And would that be a time to start thinking of senior foods?)

Solo looks so good to me. He's fit. Happy. All smiles (mostly - when he's not playing Dust Bunny). His coat is still jet black and pure white. Except around the eyebrows where I notice the white hairs of age showing up. But he's at the age where all my other newfies began a marked decline. Granted, that was back when 'dogs live outside' and they had pretty bad CHD.

Times were sure different concerning dogs in the 70's.

Solo turned six this past January

Well, if a newfie showed up in rescue at a certain age. Let's just say 7. Would you say they are senior? Or base it more on what they are like? (alert and active as opposed to slow and achey?)

One of mine (from the 70's) died at 7. She was pretty well "old" at five. Solo was just getting started at five. Another one of mine died at 12. She never really did slow. Her death was a shock to us all. She died quietly, at home, in one of her spots.

THey have to be 7 to be entered in Veteran's classes, all though that is for any breed. But it seems to me that is the magic numbers used when referring to seniors. Many of the Newf clubs consider 10 to be Golden Oldies.

In any case they reach it too darn fast!!!!

Edited to add: I think Joan made a typo. They have to be 7 to show Vteran

thanks, Jeannie - I fixed it now.

How old is Veterans Class?

And yeah, I agree. They grow up waaay too fast. I refuse to acknowledge there will be a Day Three. (when you say goodbye). At least for the time being.

Seven

Sara didn't slow down until she was about 11. In fact at age 10 she got her DD title

Panda just turned 10 and she is really slowing down--Lots more so than Sara was at this age

I started feeling sad about Stoli growing old when I first read their life expectancy. Bailey-Daphyne is about 7 but from what I hear, she acts like a goof-ball. So, I guess that means with Solo and Baily-Daph and Panda and Cora and Sailor and all the rest of the "senior class" we just have to give them extra special newfie luvin'.

I've always understood the life expectancy is aboaut 8, but I sort of feel that we're probably changine that age upwards...better vet care, more attention to weight and nutrition. Lucky is six and if you use 8 as your standard she would be the equivalent of a 60 year old woman more or less...like me...Well, she can play like an 8 month old! Still, I think that her advancing age played into my decision to get a puppy! yeah.
