Hi everybody, Not sure if im in the correct section but here goes. Well Noah was one yesterday!!! (pics to follow) and to me he seems to have become skinny. He is on the same diet as always and on the requiered amount but just seems under weight. I think he may have grown taller slightly. He is wormed up to date so i know thats not the problem, But was wondering is it normal for Newfs to have a growing spurt around this age and maybe he jsut need feeding a little more?? if this doesnt work i will take him to the vets but just thought i would ask some advice on here first

Any advice will be great

Newf's do go through what I call the "distorted stage". They get their height first, and then fill out. They can look skinny and underweight from that height.

If his health is fine, that could be what it is. If he's very active, like my Merlin, you could feed a little more. How much does he eat a day?

Sounds like the "Teenage Uglies" to me. I agree with Jane - if he's very active, you could up his feed a bit. Take heart, these, too, shall pass!

I check Gunny's height when he seems skinny
He just grew another half inch; last month his rear was high, this month he is level
It all depends on the bloodlines; Gunny's grandsire was 33 inches at the withers.
My Tulsa didn't mature until he was almost 4
They say that if you can feel the ribs but not see them; they are the perfect weight.

I keep our girls light weight on purpose. It's easier on heart, hips, etc. The vet always comments on how tucked up their tummies are. I have noticed that they generally drop about 5 pounds in the summer, and pick it back up in the fall/winter (but maybe that's just their winter coats?? LOL).

Bär just grew another inch in the last week. He is now 30 inches at the shoulder and weighs 150 pounds. No ounce of fat on him, all solid muscle. He even looks skinny compared to the 100 pound shepherd/bernard mix that is our neighbour.
If you think he needs more, offer 1/2 cup more per meal, if he eats it fine, if not you know he is getting enough.

I don't see anything wrong with 150 lbs at 30 inch. He's still young and you don't want to add any excess weight to his joints.

As he matures he will start to round out on his own. I wouldn't start a routine that you might have to reverse or that you might regret later. Keep him thin. He's not starving, trust me.
