Water Work Training

I'm training Maddie (14 mths.) for water work. I've requested Judi Adler's book, however she's is the process of revising it, and isn't sending anything out right now.
Someone sent me an article on teaching a "reliable retrieve",which consists of prying Maddie's mouth open, sticking the bumper in, saying "take", then giving a treat.
I'm wondering if anyone has other suggestions on teaching this, or can you tell me if I'm on the right track?

Thanks !!

THere are several method of teahing a retrieve. RIght now I can't find my books 'cause they're in box that we haven't unpacked yet since our move.
The are inducive retrieve methods by Wendy Volhard or Sue Sternberg. There is also a force retrieve using an ear pinch by Diane Bauman.

I personally use Diane BAuman's method. I found the inducive retrieves were not working with my dogs. They didn't believe they had to do the retrieve

Thanks for your help!
The article I was reading was from Judi Adler's book. The women at Newfy Rescue had sent it to me to get started. It did suggest the ear pinching.
I'm going to keep up what I started for a few more days and see how it goes. At this rate, we'll never be ready for water work!
