Water Rescue Training Seminar

Moby the ‘I have not swam yet’ Newf is going to a water rescue seminar tomorrow with The BC Newfoundland club at a local lake. Last weekend we were going to a family dinner at a restaurant in White Rock BC. and when we were parking the car we spotted a smaller Newf returning from the beach. My family knows that there are 2 things that override most plans: looking at a well-built Jeep and meeting with another Newf. Found out from the owners that their Newf was also a ‘wader’ but they were taking her water rescue training. I had seen the BC Newfoundland club’s web site before but the activities listed were all on Vancouver Island, hard to justify a $75 ferry ride each way. With an event on my side of the water I contacted the club, sent in my membership application and received the seminar details.
So it will be interesting to see how Moby does with the other Newfs swimming. Hopefully all he needed was a few friends to swim with. I will let you know the results.

Is the BC Newf club putting it on and where is it on the lower mainland Rob? I'm sure you will learn lots and have fun.

Yes it was the B.C. Newf club with Sheryl (Cheryl?) from Oregon. The location was at Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Park.

We tried a couple of methods to get Moby to swim; go for the retrieve toy and swim with another Newf which did not get results so in the end two of us slowly walked him back and forth across the beach into deeper water . He would swim around us to head back to shore and ‘rewards’. Worked this a couple of times during the day. He can swim I just don’t think he believes he can.

Will have to keep working it until he is comfortable with swimming.

We've been taking one of Bo's Newfie friends, Brody, out swimming with us to try to get him used to the water, too. He's also a wader. Will run headlong into the water, then come to a dead stop when his paws have to leave the sand. The first day, he still refused to swim. We went again today, and found the only thing that worked was for his owner to go out to swimming depth in the water and softly call for help. This got Brody's attention, then one of us at his depth lifted him enough in the water to get his front feet off the bottom, and he would swim out to his owner. After a couple tries, all we had to do was touch his sides and he would launch forward and start swimming. Then his owner would toss a bumper a few feet past her, and he would gladly go grab it and bring it in. That's just our experience of what worked to start Brody swimming. Regardless, I'm sure Moby is having fun!

Beau never goes out in deep water-so he is a wader too.

However whenever we did the water training and l was in the middle of the lake he would come and happily rescue me
