Perhaps this is an often repeated thread..but I was wondering what vacuum cleaners you experienced newfers use to vacuum newf hair.

I'm due for a new one and want one that is excellent at picking up pet hair.

Thanks!!

I have the Eureka Pet Pal. It picks up the hair very well when it is working well. It always gets clogged though, and is a mess to clean out. And I only have one shedding newf!

I agree with Jess on this. What I love the most about the Animal, is the wand that easily pops off to do drapes, stairs, flooring underneath cabinets, etc.

My only distaste for this machine is that I have to clean off the beater bar due to wound up Newfie hair after every vacuuming. But I will tell you that my housecleaner did a 'happy dance' in front of the closet where it's stored when she opened it up and found out I'd purchased a Dyson. I thought the dear soul was truly having a seizure (if that's not a ringing recommendation, from someone who cleans for a living, I don't know what is!!!)

Dyson Animal, and I second the statement about cleaning the hair off the beater bar. I thought I was doing a good job of that, but the newfie hair had got wound around the innards of the shaft, the motor started smelling hot and the shaft broke. Newfie hair is strong! In the 5 years I have had it, that is the only repair and cost $29.95 for a new beater bar. Now when I have drifts of newf hair I pick up the drift, not as much fun as watching it get sucked into the animal!

I actually have the Animal. I absolutely adored it when I first got it. I have a lab mix who sheds a sweater's worth of white hair every day. The animal was the first vacuum that actually picked it up...initially. I'm not sure how many years into it, but it eventually lost it's "suck". It's ok on wood floors etc now but not great. I've cleaned it all out but the problem didn't resolve. Maybe I need to bring it to a vacuum repair guy and see if he can get it working again for me.

Or, buy a new one! (they work so great when new!)

I LOVED my Dyson...until it stopped working after two years and I found out that the nearest repair place for them is a three and a half hour drive from me...one way.
I sold it for parts and chucked the rest......Would love to have another but afraid to spend that again.

we have an old panasonic canister that needs repairs every couple of months since Lewis joined us little more than a year ago. The guy at the repair place says he gets Dysons back all the time but that seems odd given all the raving fans here. And then there's evaluation on consumer reports that say that a Kenmore is the best. It's all very confusing. I am curious about the longevity of the Dyson as everyone seems so happy with them. How long do they last?

Dyson Animal. First one lasted us three years (two Newfs, three teenagers!) and we still use it on the non-carpet floors. "New" one is a bit different in design, beater brush is easier to clean, and is fantastic.

But...

Now I want the Durovac diesel powered model. Is it available by mail order, Jeff? Would probably cut cleaning time (and clutter) down to seconds!

I have read several consumer sites that rate Dyson horribly for durability and longevity...When they work they are awesome, but they seem to need repair a LOT, even with moderate use.....

My first Dyson lasted 2 yrs. I have 15 dogs.

My second is going on a year old. It's still doing fine.

I also have a Kirby. Solid, sucks like crazy and is OLD. But it's heavy, has bags, and to have a "wand" attachment, it's a PITA to have to connect and reconnect. Nothing better tho. It's a true workhorse which never dies.

We have a Beam central vac - and when you empty the canister, you could probably make 10 sweaters out of all the dog hair!!
