Unexpected Visitors (a little long)

Yesterday after I fed the dogs dinner, I leashed up Ty to go out to do his business in the yard. We do not have a fence but the yard is surrounded by trees. Within moments, out of what seemed like nowhere, appears what looks like two miniature wolves. Ty and I were quite startled at first, but one of them was playful and I noticed they both had collars with tags. They we both covered in stickers and burrs. :darn: I yelled for Mike who was in the front yard and he quickly came over to help me round them up.

The playful one quickly came to us, but the other dog was very cautious. Mike put both Ty and Boaz into the garage, and together we lured them into our screened-in patio with food. Marley was quick to accept food from my hand, but Milky Way took a bit of time. I was able to read the tags and called the owner who seemed most grateful we had the pair. They lived miles away. I looked on line and I think they were mini Alaskan Klee Kais, but not healthy ones. They both looked so scrawny. :(

While we waited for them to be picked up, Marley began marking my dog’s water bowls, and the floor of the paver patio I just thoroughly cleaned and scrubbed SATURDAY! :cussing2: I leashed them both and tied them outside. The owner showed up after a while and explained they got out of the garage while they were at church. He also said they had a puppy too, but that one hadn’t escaped. He loaded them both into the back of a box truck, and promptly lowered the door. I’m wondering if I returned these two back to a BYB. :( I wanted to help, but now I feel a little bad. I’m not sure what else we could have done though, except, as Mike said, squirt them with a hose!

I bleached all the places Marley had marked, as well as the leather leashes. Boaz and Ty were returned to THEIR patio, and Ty has now marked all the places that Marley marked. This makes sense to me, but will this be the end of Ty’s marking, just the once? Or might he continue?

Also, Ty has always been one to get very excited around other dogs, especially little ones, in a playful way. We have been working on his control, but this time, I could not manage him. Mike had to take him away from the situation because he was too strong for me. Do you think this is because these runaways entered Ty’s yard?

Sorry for the length. Would appreciate input.

You had no way to tell anything about the owner and did the right thing to call the owner. We have been working on small dog excitement too. It might have been because they were in Ty's yard or it might be because there were two of them and they were loose. It was just too much temptation for Ty but I'm sure you'll get there if you keep working with Ty.

I didn't mean to sound judgemental about them, there were just a few things they said, and many things they appeared not to know about the two that left us being suspicious.

Thanks for the reply.

I have a fenced yard, but I can assure you if these two entered my yard and marked it, there would be a pee-fest going on here, lol. Mine never mark in the house-I don't think one thing necessarily leads to the other. Ty could have been doing it to mark territory or just to cover that dog's scent, and there are several other reasons for marking-sexual availability, stress, anxiety, social heirarchy, etc.

Please don't beat yourself up about returning the dogs to the owners, it was the only thing you could do and you kept them safe-great job!
