I recently posted in the general comments section. I tried to also link a photo to an Avatar but it didn't work. Still trying. Anyway, I never really introduced myself.
We are Bob, Vicky and Robert (5yrs old). We adopted a beautiful 2-4 yr old Malamute in 1996. It had been about a year since I lost my Doberman that I had raised from a pup...ear spints and all. I wasn't really ready, but I saw her and when she licked my face, we knew we had to take her home. We weren't too sure how long she would have as a full grown, large dog and not adopted yet...well.
Our son came along in 98 and although she was very tolerent, she wasn't a real warm and fuzzy when it came to noisy, precosious kids. She had her moments, but she was a good girl. This spring she developed swelling in her front carple. Thought it was a sprain. It turned out to be bone cancer. The decission was painful, but necessary for her. I believe she wanted it. Pooka was a beautiful girl and we will miss her.
After a quite two weeks, our cat had no one to chase him and had pretty much the run of the house, but stayed downstairs in the basement alot..next to Pookas area. After much discussion, we decided to slowly start to look for another pet. Malamutes led to enlightening conversations about their temperments...especially with neighborhood animals. We were directed towards Newfies, went to a draft pull, shared names and resecued Tucker. Our 5 year old is getting used to the licks. Mmmm, two 5 year olds in the house. Tucker is great. We are still learnning from each other, but he fit in right away.
Thanks for the forum and the oportunity to pay a small rememberance to Pooka and the chance to brag on a breed that I believe has found a home with our family from now on. If someone can tell me how to post a photo, what service to use for the URL etc, I will post a pic.
Thanks again,
Bob R.
