True OR False

Ok, we are planning to get another Newfie and we want a Landseer. We were told this week end that the Landseer coat is not as nice as a black. They said their coats are thinner and not very nice. I have never touched a Landseer -- please all of you Landseer people -- let me know the truth!!! I find it hard to believe.

I can only speak for my Halli, but her coat is very soft, and very full. I think it has to do with diet, as well, as we give her Omega Fatty Acid supplements everyday. But I'm no expert.

General's coat is not as nice as Triton's BUT I think alot of that might have to do with the previous owner shaving him down all the time, and now that we don't do that he is starting to get a nice newfie coat, but it will take some time. But in general I think they are the same, but I am no expert either....Jeannie??? Rhonda

Sailor's coat is alot more "wooley" than the girls. Like Rhonda, we attribute this to the fact that his previous owner shaved him down every summer. It's very soft and fluffly.... :D

spayed or nuetered animals never have the coat intact ones do!
the females due to hormonal changes tend to have thinner coats more often due to shedding out before they cycle.
spayed females are loaded with coat, sometimes not the same texture as the unspayed counter parts.
the landseer has a wonderful coat.
i prefer it to the blacks.
do go put your hands on them before you judge.
many people do NOT LIKE landseer and some in the show ring snub the landseer like they are diseased or something.
to heck with them.
i love mine, they have great coats.
and they are full of mischief.

Well...I know virtually nothing about the differences. However from what I've seen, the Landseer coat is just as wonderful as the Black...but it is different. All Landseers that I've seen have a "sleeker", longer outer coat, which appears to "drape" more. Of course I haven't seen enough of them to know if that's usual, or not!!

More depends on the lines the dogs are from giving them a certain TYPE of coat. I've seen both Landseers and Blacks having good and bad coats. The research, and knowing the parents and grandparents is what produces certain types of coats.

It usually doesn't matter what type of coat you start with, once they are spayed/neutered it changes.

OK Dumb question here.
Would you consider Kimber (an Irish Spotted) a Landseer for this question? If so she has a soft nice coat. If not never mind she has more like a blacks coat.

Our black Newf, Lady, always had a lot of topcoat & undercoat that was usually soft to somewhat coarse.
Our Landseer, Bo's coat is very soft & silky and he did have a fair amount of undercoat til' I got my Mars King.
I've had a couple of groomers comment on how nice his coat is.

I dunno Christine, I've had show people tell me they'd kill for Gracie's coat :D

Both of our girls are still under a year, but from the coats they have now, Lucy's (landseer) is definitely more soft and silky. Maggie's (Irish Spotted) is more like the blacks we met at the get-together...fuller, and a bit coarser to the touch (but still soft).

Jeannie's Panda has a nice coat, and she's a landseer. Her coat looked full, AND silky.

I would have to say that Gus's coat is the same as my blacks was as far as silkyness. I think the white doesnt seem to mat as fast. He has more undercoat then she did. could be a male female thing...dont know...I think Gus has a great coat but i could be bias! :D

Bear is mostly black and his coat is softer and silky but he is only 7 months old whereas my female Lanseer is 4 years old and has a soft but thicker and longer coat. I just assumed it was the age difference.

I have noticed that Panda's coat holds watere longer than the blacks. She is very hard to dry (the white hair) She also sheds more than Adam and Sam combined. Her hair also has a different texture not as course.

Have both, love 'em both, would still if they were shaved bald. Its their personalities for me.

I mean, check-out the aviator (its a northern expression): Maggie the big sister and Lucy the linebacker. Their coats might be different both they both are a mess and pet the same at the end of the day.

The white is different on the black and white coat compared to the black. It's just as nice, the white is just different.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I doesn't matter to me either way. I just found it odd that the same breed would have different coat due to color.

Oh well -- just wanted to find out -- Thanks again!
