Ok I can use some ideas on how to trim Jakes toenails without losing my hands LOL, can anyone offer me some suggestions? They really need clipped if I can't do it after some suggestions I guess I will wait until his vet visit on Monday.

Thanks

Diane, if you haven't done it before, wait until Monday. Let the vet show you. You need the correct tool and also must be careful not to cut the quick. If you do, they can bleed out in the worst case sinario. You also need powder to stop the bleeding on hand just in case. Newfs have black nails so it's difficult to tell how far up to clip. Be careful. Linda

Linda, I got some clippers with a guard so I don't go to far and I also got the powder to stop the bleeding if it would happen. Thanks
I probably will just wait until Monday and let the vet do it though.

I have the clippers with the guard also. My vet suggested putting a nylon over the foot so the nails would come through. Well, quite honestly that didn't help me. Of course these newf nails are quite thick and won't come through the stockings well. I usually wait until Brady is all tired out.

Just because your toenail trimmers have a guard does not mean that you will not get the quick. If you are unsure about trimming nails ask your vet to show you. Really it is very easy, but I speak from years of experience.

If you do get the quick, flour will also stop the bleeding. Just remember to hold your finger on the end of the nail because blood needs to clot against something

I always trimmed my pups nails when they were chewing on a rawhide, or other chew toy. This distracted them and kept their mouth busy. I would even pretend to cut their nails and hold their paws and rub them a little so they got used to their paws being touched and helf steady. This would always be followed by a treat and lots of praise. Now when I do their nails, they run into the kitchen to get their treat.
