Transitioning to another food.

Hello everyone,
I just got my Newfie 3 weeks ago. He is almost 3 years old. They were feeding him Alpo and I am trying to get him on Fromm Grain Free. I started giving him 1 3/4 cups Alpo with 1/4 cup Fromm and he was doing fine up to a 50/50 mix, but more than that and he has diarrhea. Should I just go slower? Should I get him on regular Fromm, with grain first? I've had several people tell me that it should only take a week. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

It really depends on the dog. You might have to leave him at 50/50 for a while longer (another week) then slowly increase it.

CONGRATS on your new addition!!!! I've always taken a month to switch my guys over, so maybe stay with the 50/50 for a while? If it ends up not working, perhaps the new food isn't working for him? Grain free is too rich for my knuckleheads. I hope his tummy settles soon!

It depends on what you are switching to also. If you are currently feeding a brand of chicken based food and you want to switch to another brand of chicken based food, the transition may not take too long. A longer transition is needed if you were going from chicken to fish or lamb, etc.
