Too hot for man or newf

Seams we have a little global warming going on. The NW is having the hottest summer in over 30 years. It is supposed to be over 90 again today. Last night when we went to bed it was 85. Boagie was miserable. She was laying on the tile in our bathroom with the fan on her (on high) I took wet towels and had her lay on them. I even took Ice packs and put them between her legs and on her chest. But still she just layed there panting and panting.
We do not have air conditioning because it does not get that hot around here.. or so we thought. Any ideas? I am trying to keep the dogs out of the lake, it is really low and something of a quagmire.
Annie, where did you get that cool bed you gave to Sar. If this weather continues I am going to have to have something like that.

Poor Boagie :( One thing we do for the rabbits at work is fill up the two liter soda bottels with water and freeze them. Then they lay against them during the day. Would probably make a fun toy for the dogs too. The canine cooler beds work great also. Does Boagie like to eat ice cubes. I go through many bags of ice with Emily during the summer.

I saw those cooling beds this weekend at Petsmart

Cooling Bed

I also saw these really cool bones that you stick in the freezer and then give to the dogs. The material is some kind of canvas looking stuff. I couldn't find them on the website of Petsmart but I know they have them.

Yes it is hot around here. I think the tile is the best thing. Or if your shower floor has tile, you could wet it occasionally and that will stay cool. I've seen the canine cooler beds at several websites and there is a pretty big price difference.

Do you have a problem with Newf slobber ruining your tile grout? We did in every house we've lived in regardless of how well we sealed the grout.

Good luck!

Jenn, Thank you for the link. I am going to order one. I just cant stand to see Boagie so uncomfortable. I am trying to convince Brian we need to install a geothermal heat pump so we can have air conditioning (not to mention it is the most environmentally friendly way to heat and cool your house). Maybe this summer will do it.

I cannot imagine not having a/c after we went all those weeks without. I would be more dead then the dogs I think. I hover around the a/c when his back is turned setting it cooler. LOL.

I hope the bed helps and I would look around to find it for the best price.

I bought one of those chilly bones and while they are great for a teething puppy, they do thaw out very quickly :( You could probably save the money and just do the frozen dish towel thing.

Since dogs cool themselves mostly from their tongue and pads of their feet. You could also wet their paws with cold water to cool them down. Good Luck.

Hi dogger,
I can relate to the heat in the NW, here it's pretty warm too.
I made cool coats for our guys, went to Walmart and bought in the automotive dept. a synthetic chamois cloth, it's used for wiping cars, comes in pretty colours.
Anyway, shaped it around the neck, actually used 2 machined together for the newfs, one for the lab, stitched those snap things, like on a dog collar, around the neck and under the belly.
Froze them, then thawed as necessary and make very wet, they don't drip and the dogs keep cool but can walk around withought messy dripping.

We ended up buying a kiddie pool so he can go lay in it when he needs to cool off. Now I mop a lot inside....

:( I was just going to say get a kiddy pool. But I also would think about keeping poor baby wet down, even in the bathtub. It's only water to clean up. I got over worring about my floors a long time ago. Good Luck, it sounds like you are all miserable!

I ordered from petsmart with a rush on delivery. They had one of the cheaper prices and if there is a problem with the bed I can take it back to the store.
Tonight we are going to take boagie to the Snoqualmie river so she can cool down before bed. This heat is insane
. This is what I call Africa Hot. I know even though we are not in the triple digits, and we do not have 90% humidity, any time we have more than 4 days above 85 in an entire summer it is Africa Hot.
At the beginning of the summer i bought a kiddy pool, but I am the only one who uses it for anything besides a big water bowl... Actually that is not true. Baby sleeps in it when it is empty.
Angela I will try the chamois clothes as well. That may be good for Max, the dobie. He is too neurotic for the cool bed and would eat holes into it.

We've been about 100 for 2 weeks now. Getting real tired of it.
But a few months ago we had central air installed and I absolutely love it.
As do all the animals-
2 legged and 4 :D
I hope the cool bed helps, cold water on the feet and ice cubes to eat and play with help too.
Sometimes I fill the tub a quarter full and let Gracie play in it

Boy Dogger, sounds like you have your hands full. I'm with the doggies - the older I get, the more I despise summer (keeping in mind that Ohio gets into the 90s most years for a stretch of time, accompanied by what feels like 200% humidity). The wading pool idea is the only one I'm familiar with, but it works like a charm with Troy. When we come home from a walk or he's been on asphalt for even a few minutes, he marches straight into his pool and just stands there, but it obviously makes him feel better. Good luck to you and try to keep in mind that it won't last forever.

Just an FYI, if you don't want to go out bare foot from the heat, the dogs shouldn't either! The hot summer concrete/asphalt can cause major burns to pads and paws!

Flower got burned pretty bad once and the vet yelled at me for being inconsiderate to her poor wittle dogging tootsies. They make cold AND warm weather shoes for dogs, and if you walk them not on grass, look into them...

S'pose to be 107 here tomorrow...uggghh! D'Artagnan is actually handling it all pretty well, even requiring his usual play time after I get home from work. We give him frozen bones, ice cubes, and the sprinkler to keep cool. He refuses to get in the kiddy pool we bought him. Funny how he will get in the swift Willamette River or the Clackamas River at full tilt, but you cannot even DRAG him into his little four inch deep kiddy pool. The tough part is keeping him cool in the van when we go out on search and rescue training. He has to spend a lot of time in the van waiting his turn...again, we use ice and a large household fan plugged into a power inverter to keep him comfortable.

I think we should all move to Alaska! It sure has been a strange year (for all of us, I guess)weather-wise.

Laura - when we walk Troy or even if we're just out front, he has a choice of grass, cement or asphalt. I just meant that when it's hot out overall, he heads straight for his pool - the water stays really cool as it's under shade trees. If I won't do it barefoot, I don't expect him to either.
