Ticks

It seems the ticks are going to be bad in our area this year. Sully is not out long without us, and does not go out in the woods behind the house, but he has had two ticks this year already, and in the past he hasn't had any. We are using the flea and tick.
Just can't believe it!

Why would this matter? You would not likely see a tick drop onto the dog...and you can get them too. I pulled over 2 dozen off my dogs a few weeks ago, crawling in their fur, after an hour in the yard (not the woods) with my family. We had a few crawling on us too. My DD and DH have been bitten by 2 and I've had 1.

We are using the flea and tick.
Which one? Frontline claims to cover ticks (I checked the package at Costco yesterday and they are still claiming it) but it does not. We were frontlining and never had a tick in MA then were covered in CT. Meaning, there just weren't any where we were in MA (Melrose, suburb North of Boston, sunny/grassy yard and neighborhood, no deer).

We've switched to Vectra 3D for the dogs and it's working (switched right after the last tick incident) and had the yard sprayed. No more ticks in the yard, fingers crossed.

We are also using Vectra 3D. It's worked pretty well so far. Maggie has only had ticks right by her feet where the fur is very thick. Now I make sure to check there quite often...

I agree that they may be bad this year. Our neighbor's lab has already had a ton! Yuck!

I guess I did not clarify myself when I said Sully is not out long without us. Of course if he were in a woods it would not matter if we were there or not, we have never in all the years we have lived here had a problem unless the dogs were in the woods. What I ment was he is not in the woods while we are with him.
He is on Frontline.

Frontline has been totally ineffective here. The Preventic collar works well on ticks and lasts several months.

Anyone tried the Scalibor collar??? - it's supposed to hit fleas and ticks.

We never used to have trouble with ticks because of keeping the dogs out of the long grass. This year is a different story though. A rough winter might have kept these nasty creatures at bay...

We only get ticks up here from Oct to March and this winter has been the best I can remember for years, very very few ticks:groovy: We don't use any preventative because tick bourne diseases are not an issue here and we use garlic pills daily to prevent fleas.

Not that this info. helps you down there, but I read this thread and realised just how few ticks we had this winter!!!!!

I switched from Frontline after my first Newf was Lyme-positive 3 years ago. Since thenm he's been on Advantix and had 2 additional tick-borne diseases....And my youngest Newfy....on Advantix all along has also already tested Lyme-positive.

does anyone here spray their property for ticks? In the last week, I've found two dog ticks shortly after they bit me. Now I'm disgusted. Hemi has protection in the form of frontline, which does seem to be working well, as when I find them on him they are usually dead, but I feel completely vulnerable! We are in CT...tick country....and have a big grassy yard surrounded by some wooded areas and a small wetland. The tick estimate guy is here now checking out our property. He said he would spray the yard and put a "kill box" for mice and chipmunks- the main carriers of ticks- back by the wetlands. This bothers me. I'm not sure I want to kill all of our chipmunks!!!! But if I don't, we might be stuck with a tick problem. ugh. I wish there were an easier way.....

Yes, we do - Tick Ranger guarantees no ticks or they spray again no charge. The product is (theoretically) all natural. So far they've sprayed once and we've not gotten a single tick in 4 weeks. Regular property mx is 4 sprays/year March to October.

We also switched the dogs to Vectra - but we were getting them on us too before spraying!

I don't know about mice and chipmunks - I do have bait boxes in my crawlspace and attic for the mice (and chipmunks if they so desire, I s'pose) but I'd say our biggest tick culprits (also in CT) are deer.

Is there an "over the counter" yard spray you can buy for ticks and do it yourself? Like at Lowes or Home Depot? Or do you have to get a company to come do it?

Yes.....there are several different types of sprays that you can attach to your hose and spray.
