The tail?

What is proper for grooming the unruly tail? Does it need to have the undercoat removed too, or does it even have undercoat? Both Max and Gypsy had awful looking tails and I am just clueless. It's like their yak butts and they don't like me messing with any of the back-end but it has to be done and I want to make sure I am not making it worse.

Do you mean their tail itself? You can hold it out and comb it...and trim the wispys if you want. Oh...and when you're combing/brushing the top of the tail (not the feathers) be careful you don't cut the tail itself with the brush, especially if it's a slicker. I did that once, with Chance, and it took a while to heal. I got a bit over-zealous.

The Yak butt definitely gets combed thoroughly and yes that has undercoat...

The link above is a good one!
