tested some kibble

Hey all, I have been wanting to test the kibble I am using with Elle for digestability and swell vs. some kibble packets I recvd. from various pet health/food stores in the area.
I soaked them all for 35 mints. I soaked all the dry brands of solid gold, sensible choice's large/giant breed puppy formula, wellness super 5 chicken, and wellness puppy formula. I didn't bother soaking the wysong synorgen as I am taking saranewf's word for its crumble effect. At first I thought the sensible choice would be the worst sweller. Well, low and behold all the solid gold brands swelled up to twice their original sizes and remained spongey, sensible choice was next in swelling (about 1 3/4 of its size it swelled) and remained spongey. Both wellness brands remained the same size and crubled! I figured I'd just share some of my crazy evening activities. (dh is at a bhachelor pary at the archade with some friends, puppy is sleeping in the crate, kitties are sleeping and ds is asleep, so I figured I'd make the evening interesting.
Also, for those of you whose vets are telling you to stick to puppy formula and you are torn whether to do so or not, I realized, from reading the labels extensively, that Bill Jac Select and Wellness Puppy formula have very similar protein/fat ratios. I would def. subtract about 1/2 to a cup from the suggested amount to give to one's pup as the serving on the back seems to be consistently high as are the serving of lots of other brands.
Being a novice at all this, I am in NO way suggesting any of the above foods for anyone's puppy! *L* Just figured I would share some of the stuff I am reading as most of the stuff seems like GREEK to me! *L* Def. follow your breeders' suggestions and vets!
Hugs,
Ellesmom
PS My baby was 13 weeks on Monday, weighing in at 26 lbs! She is a definite challenge, very stubborn and nippy, but oh she is a smart, fun pup. I really think she would LOVE to go swimming. Does anyone think I should introduce her to the local lake's beach yet??

I sounds like you made good use of free time, testing the kibble. Interesting findings. I hope you took notes on your experiment, since it souunds like you just did your son's future science project!
As far as the swimming goes, it would not be a bad idea to take her to the lake and get her feet wet a little, but if it an area frequented by other dogs, you may want to wait and make sure she is up to date on her parvo shots.

Yes, I wrote down my findings! hee hee I definitely feel better about what kibbles she won't eat (process of elimination). But, I am still on the line about which one we are going to keep her eating. If she stops itching, I'll keep her on Wellness. When I got her from the breeder she was scratching herself, licking her paws and biting her tail like crazy. Plus, within a day she had welts. So, we gradually changed her food to wellness. Now, I am waiting for the other food to completely get out of her system. I am hearing conflicting information about how long it takes, some say 3 weeks, some say up to 6 weeks. So, we are giving it the six week go to see if she stops scratching, biting her tail..etc.. I'll let you know! *L* Hopefully we can keep her on Wellness. It is a wonderful food and has a lot of fish fats which are supposedly good for the synthesis of vitamin E in newfs. (don't know if that last bit is true or not)Plus, its ration of Protein/Fat is great, even in the puppy formula.

Sarahnewf,
You are so cute! I was on the phone-food rep with the animal supply store health, doing the food circle thing (conversation-wise). Then it hit me, I have to supplement, the food isn't fresh. It's not like she is eating the fish fresh from the source...hmm. It was driving me nuts why I couldn't just give her the Wellness puppy formula, which gets the majority of their fats from good quality fish oil, and it is baked. But, it isn't fresh, fresh, raw that is, so who knows if the little "bugger" is asimilating (sp?)the vitamin E well from the dry kibble. Okay, many posts later, I am going to supplement her kibble with vitamin E! *L* Thanks sarahnewf! I already feel better. I felt like I was doing my newf a diservice...because of her dry skin (which started before I even had her!!). I swear, I never guessed I'd get the same guily feelings worrying while mothering a newfie!
*L*

I have a question about your science project. I take it that swelling is bad? Why were you testing for swelling?

Hi Laurie, I posted a question on to soak or not to soak, lol because Akira (8mts)stopped eating. I was feeding her soaked food and she always ate everything I gave her. She stopped suddenly w/ no hint of disapproval. Sarnewf gave info to do a soak test for absorbtion of water and compare the size of swelling. From what I got out of it the less sweeling the better digestion. Am I right folks ? ? ? Anyway, I know this didn't prompt the science project, but the more information we share the better.

If the food crumbles apart with barely any welling it is digestable, if it swells and stays spongy it is more likely to sit and ferment in the tummy

Ah, I see. Well, that makes since. Probably also causes discomfort as it swells, you know that bloated feeling we humans get from eating too much carbs?
