Taylas Operation

We spoke to the surgeon today and he can fit Tayla in for her surgery (to hopefully fix her incontinence) next Tuesday.

He said the chances are:
50% make a full recovery no more leaking,
45% make a full recovery with the help of one hormone tablet a week, and
5% there is no difference at all.

He is optimistic that Tayla will make a full recovery given her age and that she hasn't been incontinent to long. Fingers crossed!

The only problem is that she has to stay overnight.
I am already stressing out about leaving my baby at the hospital without me.I'm sure she wil be ok but I can't help but worry.

Please keep your fingers crossed for her and I will let you know how it all goes.

Now, you know I am praying this goes well for you guys!

Tayla will be abrave girl about her overnight stay, I'm sure you will be a lot worse than her.

She will not be in that 5% bracket, I just know it!

I will be in Noosa for a week starting Thursday so will be eagerly checking my email / Newf Net for any updates a week from then!

Good luck!

I must have missed something, what is wrong with Tayla? Gracie has had incontinence since she was about a year old I believe, and we manage it with phenopropanolamine. The hormone that is sometimes used can have some side effects....

We'll say a prayer for Tayla that the surgery will work out in her favor and she gets a 50%!

Madison has been incontinent also..since she was 9 months old. I noticed it immediately after her first heat cycle. This happened before she was spayed at 1 yr. She is now 7 and has stayed dry on a combo of PPA and DES.

Good luck,
Pam

Thanks for the well wishes.

We have tried Tayla on everything. She has been on hormones, sudafed (the normal human version), horsetail, another medication that I can't remember its name and also heaps of herbal remedies. They all work for a couple of weeks and then it is like she is on nothing again. The leaking is so bad lately that she has gotten a massive infection around her vulva. We didn't want to operate but her case is really bad and it is the only option left.

I think Tayla will go through surgery with flying colors, and the operation will be a sucess.
Our pets are an extension of our family, and we worry like crazy. When she gets back home, I'am sure she will be SOOO pampered
Please don't worry, she will be fine.

Tayla and Rory have the same problem with leaking - they are littermates. It is not spay-related, according to the specialist we took Rory to.

The one we spoke to believes Rory (and more than likely Tayla) has a short, wide tube that carries the urine out of the body instead of a long, narrow tube like it should be. Because it is wide, their muscles down there cannot close it off when they want to stop the flow. The tests we had indicated this was the problem.

The surgery we are planning on having (and I assume it is the same for Tayla) is inserting a plastic coil around the tube to tilt and narrow it.

Good luck Nicole, Tayla and Nigel! I will be thinking of you guys on Tuesday!!!

I just read this post, isn't today the day for Tayla's surgery? I hope everything went well. Sorry I didn't read this sooner.

I started another topic the other day on Incontinence.
Kuma is 14 months and had a urine infection first at 4 months of age, then at 8 months after spaying and now its back. We've determined the problem is from her vulva folding over her urethra, and keeping the bacteria in. At 4 months they suspected it would fix herself as she grew but it hasn't. I don't want her on PPA because we were advised of a lot of possible side effects. Now our decision is whether to do the surgery right away or wait another 5 months as she's still growing. We'd have to keep her on another antibiotic in the meantime.
The funny thing is we just switched vets because they were trying to solve the incontinence with drugs rather then finding the problem. When I switched vets its the first thing he noticed. You'd think the first vet would have caught the problem seeing that they diagnosed her first infection!

I wish I'd seen you other post on incontinence, I'd have responded for sure!

Rory is yet to have this same operation but will be soon. We have Rory on one Sudafed tablet a day - psuedoephadrine - and this controls the leaking quite well much of the time. But of course, not all the time, hence the operation. We definitely notice a big difference without the tablet.

Her leaking has been better lately but always goes up and down.

Good luck with your Kuma's leaking, Kuma! Rory too had a UTI when she was about 3 months, it's awful for them.

I hope we hear from Nicole soon about Taya's progress!

I haven't heard and have sent Nicole an email a while back too about it...but I'm thinking she may have taken time off from work to look after Tayla post-operation, and I think she usually uses the internet from work.

Hopefully that's why we haven't heard from her and nothing else!

Hi everyone.

Sorry it has taken me so long to let you know about Tayla's progress but I have been flat out at work. I work at a university in their printing department and with first semester starting next week and us printing all of the course handbboks etc it has been really hectic.

Excellent news though. The operation was a one hundred percent success. Four weeks and not one leak at all. Hooray :D It took her about a week to recover form the surgery she couldn't lay down or sit properly and she was in heaps of pain. It also took her about two weeks to pee properly (she was only doing tiny dribbles) because before she just squatted and the pressure would force the urine out so it took her a while to figure out how to use her bladder muscles. All is well now and she is going great.

Thanks everyone for well wishes. Tayla sends slobbery kisses your way. ;)

This great news, thank you so much for the update. Thank Tayla for those kisses, nothing like a newf kiss to set your day straight.
