Taking 1 and leaving the other

Maybe I'm being silly but I'll soon be getting my new show pup and next summer he and I will be showing quite a bit I hope. My problem is Rafe. He LOVES to show but I will probably be leaving him home alone with the Golden during the day. Right now I dare not take my Golden anywhere and leave Rafe...he is so attached to me and has a fit. I'm sure when this pup comes he will have a fit when I try to take the puppy somewhere without him and afraid I may have to put him in the kennel outside instead of leaving him loose in the house.:darn: How do others with muliple pet/show dogs handle this....I'm looking for ideas how to train him to accept this. He will be coming to some shows with me, but definately not all. Thanks for any input!

I have 9 dogs in my house, I typically will take any where none to all 9 when I go out. Yes some pitch a fit, some don't each and everytime. Some only pitch a fit if I take certain others.

I make sure that at times when I have choice of who take that rotate who goes and who stays. Those that I can not trust loose in the house are crated when I leave. It doesn't matter if they are havinga fit or not because they are being left. If they can't be trusted, they can't be trusted!

I would start taking your golden and leave Rafe for short periods of time. I would start doing it Now! Let him get used to be left behind. Then start building up the time. Make sure he ahs some good toys to occupy him, possible a stuffed kong if he likes those.

Joan, thats a good idea.....glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm going to start taking my Golden somewhere tonight. My niece is staying with me and she can let me know the level of panic Rafe has and what he does while I'm gone. I'm thinking I'll start slow....like just 15 minutes to the store or something and work up to a few hours at a time...it will break my heart though to leave him....I'm so attached myself!:shuffle:

I have the same problem. Katie is ok when I leave her home alone. She doesn't like it, but she does just fine. Louis, the 9 month old, is quite despondent when he is left alone - even though we are never all gone at the same time for more than 2 1/2 hours. It's really hard to leave him. He does seem to be getting a little better though.

Ella ( Newf 1 ) was used to going with us most places, she has always been spoilt in that I work days and hubby works nights - so someone was Always home with her.It came to the point that if we went out shopping she would "be naughty":whistling: ( chewing things up ...how many phone chargers did we go through in 2003 ??/!!)
Then Merlin came along when she was 2 and she again was spoilt as Merlin had leg issues which ment he was on very few walks. When Merlin got better we would walk them seperatly,so she began to learn that she would be left whilst he went out.We started by always takeing her for a walk first them him , then gradually swapping it round.
We always make sure that there is nothing she ( or now He ! ) can steal to punish us for leaving!
Now we have three, all are healthy - but I only have 2 hands and a very naughty puppy - so I walk them in relays.Again , I rotate it,Merlin and Ella first one day,Minnie first the next.
They are never happy when they are the ones 'left alone' but such is life! Merlin and Ella just give me the look, where as young Minnie loudly voices her dislike of being the one left behind!
I agree, the sooner you start leaving him,the easier it wil be when puppy arrives. His nose will be put out enough with puppy so if you do it all at the same time it will be harder

i DON'T KNOW IF YOU ARE GOING TO CRATE THEM OR LEAVE THEM LOOSE BUT WHEN jESSIE USED TO SUFFER WITH SEPERATION PROBLEMS WE LEFT SOME OLD WORN CLOTHING IN CERTAIN PLACES SO THAT SHE HAD OUR SCENT TO CURL UP WITH, ALSO LEAVE RADIO/TV ON AND START NOW AS SUGGESTED .
