Stone for a dog run- Suggestions appriciated :)

I just moved the dog run in the yard. This time, due to the mud I decided I am going to gravel it. The area is quite large, so buying bags of stone would not be an option. The rock would have to be in bulk.

The breeders I have talked to have suggested either washed 3/4" crushed stone or #4 pea gravel.

The problem I am running into.... is out of 3 local stone places, not one has either of the above types of stone.

So, I have two questions..

1. Has anyone used river stone and had success? The local mix has small rounded rocks, similar to pea gravel, but the mix can have rocks up to 2". Would the larger rock hurt paws?

2. Does anyone have alternative suggestions I may be able to find locally?

Thanks :)

You might be able to rake some of the larger stones out once it's down. I really like pea rock, but if you can't get it, you have to make do with what you can get, and I'd rake it down until it packs up a bit.
Pea rock has it's downside too, as it can get caught in their paws and get dragged into the house where it destroys the little fans on electric brooms...(over and over and over...lol.)

We have half sand and river gravel......Dogs love the sand part, because it is their sand-pit and if we are out for a long time, I hide goodies in the sand to entertain them. And they love to dig it up when it is hot to give them a cool spot. really works well in Summer if you water it occasionally. The other part is river stone, which is all sorts of sizes......Someone told me it was good for them to exercise their feet, prevent or at least reduce flat feet. We also have the indoor part and a little open area concreted, so there is a choice of surfaces........We also get very wet in Winter and we have made the levels higher then the rest of the yard. :) Ronnie

Don't get too big of stone or it can be uncomfortable for the dogs feet.
I get what's called a 1-B small washed river stone. It's perfect for feet, especially puppies. It's probably about 1/2 inch size.

Ask them to describe all their options. The stuff frequently has different names in different parts of the country but is essentially the same. We found that what we put on our driveway is called one thing here in NW FL but something different in SW VA. Not much technical difference though.

We have river gravel - round and smooth - in a part of the yard. Just to be sure it doesn't hurt their feet we put in stepping stones, and sure enough, they use the stepping stones. I would be concerned about any gravel larger than pea gravel.

Thanks for the info. I did not want to spend all of that money and time not to have it work for them.

I just put 2 ton of stone under the decks for storing pool supplies... going out to start putting fence under the other part of the deck so I can start working on the stone in the dog section. I am fencing a small section under the deck for shade for the puppers to relax in the cool part of the day.
