Sleigh Bells

Does anyone here use sleigh bells on their carts during the Holidays? Any ideas about how to? I'd really like to rig Bri's harness with some but I'm not sure about how to go about making something and where I would hang it on the harness/cart. Ideas?

My guess is that you should try draping them over her shoulders so they jingle when she moves. You could tie them somehow to her harness. That's if she doesn't mind, of course. I don't think they would make any noise on the cart unless you are on bumpy ground.

Or, for a more crazy idea, attach them to some wide elastic and put them on her front legs.

Lukey now has a new harness and it has this lovely large bell that attaches to the front D..it has a lovely jangle to it. I have also drapes small bells over the dogs and also attached a few small ones from the D's I have at the front of our harnesses.just make sure you get the dogs used to it. I had "just done it" with a couple of our dogs and when I di it to Lukey he nearly had a fit the first time. So better not to be attached to the cart. He is now quite happy with his bells

And jane's idea withte elastic, I do that to my horses when we are dressed for Christmas.so it would work :)

I love the leg idea, she'd be a jingle bell Newf for sure! Though we'd definitely have to work on her getting used to it.

R Taft, where did you find the bells that clip to the front D ring? I've been looking for places to get either a band of bells or just some larger brass craft bells to make my own and have been having a rather difficult time finding anyone who sells them.

About 2 years ago Lowe's had large sleigh bells on a leather hanger with a big loop at the end. Just Newfy size, put it around their neck and pull the loop over one of the bells You might look in their Christmas decorations to see it it's still there. I always manage to leave at least one thing out when packing up Christmas and last year it was this. It's hanging on the inside front door knob so jingles every time the door is opened.

I'll have to go see if I can find some of those decorations. All the strings of bells that are for horses seem to cost more than a brand new cart! I'm not quite that set on a jingle bell Newf!

I used dental floss to sew bells onto Chumley's harness. There were 2 on the right side, 2 on the left, and one clipped on the ring on the chest. He was in several parades in October. Sometimes we had to run to catch up with the rest of our group and we'd often get applause I assume from the bells. What a racket they make!

Check the local crafts stores. They often have bells for making decorations.
Craft stores are the go...and some of the alternative stores (healing/spiritual) Have hanging bells too...that is where I got some of mine. $10.00 for a whole string of them. My best bell came with the harness that came from Canada (Shell's Norm's harness) it is a huge bell and has a great jangle/ring

This weekend will hopefully involve a runaround to the local craft stores to see what bells they have. I'll have to see what the alternative stores have, I hadn't even thought of looking there!

Bought bells at Michael's crafts store for Maneen's harness and card when he was alive. I stitched them to the harness and we used plastic ties to tie them to the wheels. We also decorated the wheels with garland. He LOVED to get hitched and show off. LOL

I'd also check horse harnesses. I bought a beautiful Amish made sleigh bell horse harness. I don't have horses, it is hanging on my wall. My husband used to wear it when we went caroling, the bells make a beautiful sound. I bought my set at a farmer's market but know you can buy them in singles. Check out this site, they sell the type of bells we have but I am not sure how they sell them.

Yes, we are all on board with doing something with bells too. I just got some half off at our local Christmas shop. You might find some sales plus the craft stores like the other posters suggested, I'm pretty sure those Michaels places have them.
