I recently to my Newf Harley to the groomers, he was too matted (in some areas) they said so they had to shave his legs and lower hind quarters and stomach. Please tell me this will grow back.

It will..........but frequent grooming will prevent this, Paying particular attention to those areas. My dogs love being groomed and I love the time , one on one with them.......Harry was shaved totally, Last February, because he was a rescue and so terribly matted....his coat is back now, not as soft and silky as the others, quite coarse. But I am not sure if that is becuase of the shave, or just his breeding

It will grow back. Sam came to me with his legs and belly shaved. It took awhile-maybe 6 mo., but it did come back and looks fine. In fact, his feathers will grow ridiculously long-8 plus inches, and his pants were so thick, I had to cut a section out between his legs to be able to brush them out completely.

I can relate to the being ill and not able to groom often. One thing that really helps is to run your fingers through the fur to the skin looking for mats. I check the pants, chest, and belly, particularly. It takes very little time th check his legs when i am letting him out, or his chest when he comes over while I'm watching TV, and the belly during belly rubs. When I feel a lump, I know grooming attention is needed. If time is short or your health low, you can just tackle the mat and go over the rest later. This enables me to groom less frequently without worrying that mats are building up under the fur. Shorter hair helps, too. You can have his hair shortened at the groomer's without shaving or you can whack it shorter yourself with scissors. This really cuts down on tangling and matting.

My vet told me, very seriously, at Sam's first appointment, that it is ok to shave him. I love his long hair and this would not be my first choice. But if it came to a choice between giving him up because I was too ill to groom him or shaving him and keeping him, I would shave him. I have considered it more than once because of poor health. Dogs are shaved every day, and while it is not ideal, sometimes we are just keeping our heads above water and ideal is not reality.

Good luck; I hope things improve for you. :hugs:
