There will be a Newf Romp n' Swim on June 21st (Father's Day) at 11 am at Downs Park in Pasadena, MD, weather permitting. That means it's up to you whether you decide to risk the predicted 30% chance of scattered thunderstorms which usually occur in the late afternoon or evening.

Meet at 11am at the Dog Beach (NOT the Main Beach) at the northeast corner (top right on park map, link below) of beautiful Downs Park , 8311 John Downs Loop, Pasadena, MD 21122. Everything is close by and an easy walk from plentiful parking.

The last parking lot on the right is the closest and you'll walk towards the bay, taking a left on the paved trail that runs along it, There will be a fork off to the right to go to the fishing pier- don't go that way but continue straight. Just after the trail takes a 90 degree turn to the left are the semi-hidden stairs down to the dog beach where you'll find Newf paradise- golden sand and sparkling water.

For those who haven't been there before, this is a place where you can let your dog OFF the leash to swim and play with other Newfs. It is a public dog beach though so there may be other dogs there. Remember to bring poop bags.

[ Unfortunately, park rules forbid going into the water to swim with your dog. However, if you want to do this, there are Open Swim Dates available for Colonial Newfoundland Club, members ONLY, at the lake in Codurus Park near Hanover PA. There is also a Water Training Seminar on July 25th & 26th, see http://www.cncnewfs.com/ . Gomez and I have spent some of our happiest days together there. ]

Back to the Romp: Downs Park is right on the Chesapeake Bay with miles of paved trails through the woods and a children's playground. There is a $5 admission charge ($25 for annual pass, also good at the Quiet Waters & Kinder Parks), but it's well worth it for all this and real bathrooms, too. FYI, this is the park where the Romps usually take place and there's another dog beach AND a dog park at Quiet Waters Park in case you're wondering whether it's worth it to buy an annual pass.
