had one of those start slow..and endup..a whip-smack of..personal learned-lessons..for the baby. Yessiree. HB is usually along on the river treks..but today..got her commodius butt left in the large kennel..as she was waaaay too interested in wandering about..'not hearing' etc. She can get away with a lot..but..my day off from harvest..and 3-day stretch..starting again, 7 AM tomorrow, of 'back in the sales trenchs'..I was not in sufficient ..kindly humor! So..Kesa and I whirl off the half mile to the river..semi rappel down the slough slope into the gully..and thence east to the McKenzie river. Kesa started out..ahead of me, picked up speed..and..rather than turn right to the tree overhang and shady beach rock ledge.. 8 in. above the river..went straight for the mini-bluff..about 2 feet above the river. You know that sound when you toss a large , weighted container at your boat....and Miss? BLooOOP!!!!! Well..that was lesson #1..as I then heard flaling paws..as she found an area to claw her way back up. Since there is approx. 2 full blocks of ..brush and beach line..for her to deal with..if..caught by the curr., she is able to get herself out..with safety. Then..she trots about..drinks from edge..then..wades out about 10 ft..plus..and is..feeling the water pressures on her legs..not quite up to her belly..but almost. Two..of those trips..with wanders back to shake..do more looking around..then her last entry..going out..further. She is now about 20 feet out..and the depth is touching belly..and she is 'body learning' that..as I decide she better start a return..before we have her bobbing off like a champagne cork..off to the Mohawk and whirl pools about 3 blocks away..and around the curve. She reponded..and came in a straight line..toward me..and discovered the heavy-weight..of water flowing past her..impeeding progress. We had her well conditioned body..turning on..all her powers..and her face was aimed AT me..total eye contact!.. She did make it in, she stayed on the beach area for about 7 min., then went back to the waters edge..looked outward..looked down , as if perhaps a drink..and instead..backed up a paws-worth..turned around..and headed back up the gully..for ..Home. She learned a LOT today. ina n HB n Kesa

What a well-told vignette of learning and learning well. Yes, good girl Kesa. I can just see her testing the river and absorbing new knowledge. I would have been a little scared myself. Where you live sounds so beautiful.

Sometimes it's good for the younger ones to venture out without their older siblings, to learn life's lessons on their own. That's the best way to have the lesson "stick".

She sounds like quite a smart girl.

Oh if you could only translate dog language to listen in on the story she told HB when she returned home. :)
