Remi Update

Monday night I went to the registration at the new dog training place (no dogs). We watched a demonstration the trainers did with their dogs. I am in love with rally obedience and I think it's something Remi and I can eventually do. Everyone there was so kind and guess what there first rule is? If your dog acts aggressive in class they put a muzzle on him and you have to wear it for the rest of the classes. They do not put up with any bad behavior and they asked us to concentrate and focus on our dogs for that one hour so we can anticipate any problems with our dogs. If your dog does bite he will be suspended from group and put in privates until they decide what the problem is...

Last night I went to the class and there were eight people in the class with one trainer
and two helpers! I was so nervous because Remi has been barking at every dog he sees, something he has never done before. I took him thirty minutes early and we walked around and he barked some but when we got into class and started working he was O.K.I was so proud of him he did second best behind a handler with a papillon (sp.)that has her agility excellence title(?) with another dog. Remi moved on the stand and stay where the trainer came over to walk around him and touch him(I forgot what that's called)

I love my new trainer. His name is Dick and he is very kind. We will definately get our confidence back at this training facility!

Diane says she sent me a check for partial refund of my class and some on the vet bill. She said I signed a waiver that releases her from any liability and she was just helping me out because I am a friend.(with friends like these who needs enemies!!)Part of me wants to fight for what I believe in and for the dogs coming after me and the other part of me just wants to get her out of my life. I will let you know what she sends IF the check is really in the mail.

Diane always felt that Remi was just a dog and I was strange because to me he is one of my children. At the dog training club Dick has a rescue sheltie and it is his child! When he praises his baby he says he brings his voice up so many octives he sounds like a girl. They call him the Candy Man because he loves to give treats when the dogs do something good. The Candy Man is as in love with his dog as I am with mine.

P.S. All this trauma has made me realize Remi needs a sibling so I won't treat him like an only child.

That's great that you found a place that you and Remi can feel comfortable in. And the "Candy Man" sounds awesome! These Newfs are just kids in fur coats and I completely understand how you feel!

It sounds like a wonderful place. It's good when trainers love their dogs as much as we do. It gives us more confidence in them, and I think everyone does so much better.

Keep us posted on Remi's progress!

I'm glad you found a good place!

Brody goes for his first puppy class in 1 hour and I'm a nervous wreck after reading Remi's story.

Don't worry Brody! Puppy class is a whole different story! Puppies play rough, but they play fun...there shouldn't be any real aggression yet although they do start working out a dominance pecking order, it's very different from the way adult dogs do it! Brody will love class, I'm sure, especially if it's a puppy class where they're allowed to romp around with the other pups!

Remi - way to go! You're a trooper for being so brave and trying again with a new group of dogs...and your mom is AWESOME for making you get back into the saddle again! Nothing better than to socialize after an aggressive attack, so that he can learn that not all dogs are jerks!

Speaking of jerks, I cannot believe that old trainer of yours! I can't STAND the people that look at you and then say, "Well, it's JUST a dog." I always want to say, "yes, and you're just a lousy person."

give the Candy Man a hug for me, he sounds like exactly what you guys need!

Glad to hear that Remi did so well in his new class, and that your trainer is "one of us" (the people who treat their dogs like much-loved family members).

Joy, I'd tell her want a copy of that waiver. She's leaving out some information somewhere. No one would sign a waiver that says, "if your dog gets injured in my class it's your problem." Check what the waiver does say. She wouldn't be offering you money if she didn't feel liable. And, from what you tell, she was directly responcible for the dogs agitation and agression. To change a dogs teaching tool over mid class is unthinkable (unless the lesson is private) who knows how the dog will react. Stick up for your rights...You go girl! If she truely is not liable (which I doubt) the owner of the other dog is...You certainly shouldn't have to pay on cent for an injury inflicted by another!

So glad that you have found a new class for Remi--it sounds like a great match for you! That will make it so much easier for you to put this whole mess behind you and get back to doing fun activities with Remi. Good luck with it, and have fun!

As for compensation....I tend to agree with Angie....why would the trainer send you money if she didn't feel responsible? She should have insurance in place for something like this. What responsibility does the owner of the other dog take in all of this? OTOH, I can understand you wanting to just move on and put this behind you. You need to decide for yourself if this is a battle worth fighting - I think in the end you would win, but it sounds like you will have to be really strong and stand up for yourself.

Great news! We love this "Candy Man" too and we don't even know him! He sounds like a very humane, compassionate, responsible trainer. I'm with you, with "friends" like that other trainer, who needs enemies? I seriously doubt any waiver would state she's not responsible for injuries from fights, but you do what you need to do to move on. I'd ask for a copy of what I signed though. Sounds like she's trying to get off cheaply, by offering you some money and hoping you won't look too closely at just who's responsible.
Go Remi! You've got a great new class and a great mom who loves you!! YAY!
