Puppy Treats...

So Roo is almost 4 Months old and really not into these treats we purchased. I don't recall the name at the moment (I'm at work) but there suppose to be healthy made from apples and carrots.

I gave him a biscuit last night and thought he ate it but this morning I found it still on the floor and he walked right past it again ,not interested. The Funny thing is if I crinkle that bag of potato chips, trail mix or pretzels he comes running which makes me think someone in the house has been sharing... so it not like he's not interested in eating he just doesn't like those biscuits.

So I figured I would look for some biscuits on Petco's site before I drove over there, I found pages and pages of treats, way to many to pick from and I don't need another box of treats sitting around that Roo doesn't like, I already have two.

I'm looking for treats that would be a guaranteed winner, one that when he sees or hears that bag he comes running and his toes curl up when he's eating them. :)

Thoughts?

If you're looking for treats as a training aid, people food usually works. Cheese, chicken, liver.

I would be very careful about prepared treats. Too many have shown up on recall lists. Make certain that anything store bought is NOT made or sourced from China.

If he likes jerky or dried treats, it's pretty easy to dehydrate your own and you can easily experiment to see what he likes.

Or if you like to bake, there are a number of yummy recipes on this forum.

Our two love the limited ingredient treats by natural balance but we've never had a problem with them being picky they even ate those milkbone's at the vet before we figured out that our boy was allergic to chicken.

Our guys love Wellness Wellbars. They eat the whitefish & sweet potato ones and absolutely love them. They also come running at the sound of any bag crinkling. :)

Just be careful about where store-bought treats are made.

I usually buy ours at a local pet food store that only stocks USA & Canada products. For training we use people food (chicken, etc) but for normal treats her favorites are Yummy Chummies salmon treats, the dehydrated sweet potato treats by Front Porch Pets, and the freeze dried beef treats. She likes lots of others too.

I bake my own, different kind of cookies and newfy bars. I also make my own jerky.
It is much safer because I know what's in there and with Bär having numerous food intolerance, I know he can eat these. They are always a hit, I even have a big fury bear supervising and taste testing every batch. I freeze them and take a couple of days worth out of the freezer.

I just checked and the ones he doesn't like are "Nature's recipe" biscuit minis with beets. I wouldn't be buying them again. As far as baking, unfortunately I don't have that kind of time and if I did I would be baking myself some scones ;). That's my week ness along witha good short bread cookie... I digress

Thanks for all the suggestions, I need to go shopping tomorrow.

Although I've only been a member here for a very short amount of time I do appreciate everyone's warm and information.

Thanks again all.

Morgan has allergies to chicken but she does love her pumpkin crunchers, and any freeze dried treats. I only buy USA made treats or make my own.
Oh yeah when I don't have time to make treats beef hot dogs or cheese sticks work well too!!!

Just be careful you don't overdo calcium. Excess Ca (3% or more) in growing giants can cause ortho issues. I always carry the kibble (1.4% max Ca.) I feed and use that for treating. I also never supplement with dairy.

Zukes, Cloud Star and Happy Howie's are made in USA. My crew tend to like those. Happy Howie's is a roll can cut up into bite size training treats.

In the beginning, we treated with kibble. I'd measure out the day's worth and take from that when I wanted to treat. If you measure out the day's worth, you don't have to worry about over feeding. :)

Some homeade:
Turkey Hotdogs (use turkey for best results): Microwave until dried.
Banana - Dried Chips
Salmon Cookies - Chop salmon into bowl, add egg, and 2 cups of oatmeal. Mix dab small spoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake 350 until crispy. Let cool, stand out of the way or you'll get run-over.

Merrymutts has awesome cookies also. Have not seen a dog turn one down yet.
