Just wondering what ppl would reccomend for food and treats. I'm thinking innova or california natural. Blue wilderness. I'm not sure can anyone recommend some good puppy food brands and healthy treat brands

We just dry beef liver, bananas, apples...whatever we eat that they like you can dehydrate in the oven on 200 degrees or in a dehydrator. Obviously stay away from the items that are toxic to dogs. Liver here costs $1.50 a pound and they love it. I don't want to overdo the liver though so we dry a variety of things

How long to you cook the liver ( most disgusting thing in the whole world !) in the oven @ 200 degrees. We don't do many treats - but do use toppers fairly regularly. Kim

Kim, It depends on how thick it is and how big the pieces you cut are. I cut it up in tiny pieces first and it takes approx 1 hr.
If you use it as a topper it doesn't have to be boiled and then dried. Just boil it and use it..I dry it some because it makes it last longer and it makes it easier to handle for treats. To use it as a topper, just freeze what you won't use right away.
If you dry it all the way in a dehydrator or in the oven you don't have to keep it refrigerated, but I do anyways.
You don't want to give too much liver...too much can be bad, lots of Vit A and Iron

btw if you think liver is gross. Try the same thing with Sockeye Salmon. I did that last week and it was nasty. The smell is disgusting, but the dogs loved it. The other dogs could smell the treats in class from a couple feet away. Next time the salmon will go in the dehydrator out in the garage

We went thru the whole liver process and Orka refused to touch it. He hates liver in any form.

THE most disgusting thing is smelly green tripe. Orka and the kittens love it! I have to wash everything it touches with bleach to get the smell out. We're getting a good deal on beef with tripe chubs, flash frozen, potent, aaaaaiiiiiiii.

Orka not very food motivated, always trying to find treats that he will want. He sure loves turkey gizzards!

Sulley LOVE gizzards from chickens, turkeys, partridge especially. He likes the hearts as well. Those are his very special treats when he is a good boy when we are hunting. His Uncle Mike also cooks him up the drumsticks and the wings if he carries the birds without chewing them.

My guys' fav snicky snax is what we call turkey "hot dog bread" training treats. I slice a turkey frank the long way, then into half moon slices. Spread out on a paper towel in the Microwave and zap for about 2 minutes on HI pwr. Cheap, fast, easy and not messy. I also dehydrate little pieces of leftover beef roast.

We have a small microwave on our back verandah, especially for cooking our liver treats....A lambs liver in a glass bowl with cover will take 12 minutes in a 800watt microwave. if you leave a wooden spoon so that the lid stays a little open. you will get no mess. I take it out and put it on paper toweling. When it is cooled cut in small little squares. The liver feels a little rubbery and is easy to swallow and your hands stay clean. i find training with very dry food difficult, because the dogs often choke at high speed. And yes believe it or not we are speedy now. Annabelle has wheat allergy and loves this. All the dogs at training follow me and my liver treats and any dogs in my luring/positive reinforcement Obedience classes love our liver treats. Even if they ignore some of the dry treats their owners have. Only stressed dogs will ignore it in the first week, but often are OK in the second.

We feed our dogs RAW from puppy, there are lots of sites on that as it is a whole system of feeding. My dogs biggest reward is their RAW bones. that is the jackpot after a practice trial now
