Protective Newfie?

Maggie, and always has been. At 10 months, she escorted my Dad out of the house when he came over to let her out when we weren't home. He said he thought it was thundering at first because her growl was so deep. She got between a dog and Ashton at the dog that was being annoying and got all puffy, and if dogs are getting too rough around us, she'll nudge them away.

Last month I went away for the weekend, and my daughter stayed with my neighbors-who Maggie loves. He came over to let her out, and she did the same thing with him as my Dad, growled and did a slow walk towards him. He left, and came back with Ashton, and she was ok with him, but stayed close to Ashton, blocking her from him.

She also doesn't like rough-housing, and will wedge her way in between people, and she's pulled Ashton's Dad away from her because he was tickling her, and Ashton was squealing. I tell Ashton when ( if!) she starts dating, Maggie is going with her!

That being said, she is the biggest baby, and if she knows everything is ok, will flop around on her back for belly rubs and try to kiss you to death.

Ben doesn't even wake up. :shuffle: But I must admit I have NO qualms walking in the dark with him. Anyone foolish enough to mess with me and a 190+ pound Newfoundland who looks, in the dark, like the Hound of the Baskervilles, deserves whatever Ben might do.

My former two Newfs would get between me and (male) visitors. I loved them for it.

Moose is just hitting this phase at seven months. In our beginners obedience class, a Pit Bull wanted to play with him but she was very loud, mouthy and pushy. He was nervous of her until his buddy the Great Dane showed up...and then he was ALL guard dog, keeping the pit bull away from his great dane friend and body blocking her every move to get to me or the dane. Loved it.

Now he'll body block strangers when we walk, until they talk to him. ;)

Hmmm... my big boy Pom, when confronted by a bear in the yard, hid behind me. My gal Mo Mo, who is pretty ancient and a very small Newf, walked right out between me and the bear and barked until he turned around and left. It was pretty close quarters, too. That's my girl!

Sulley is normally extremely docile. He loves just about everyone. A few winters ago we got 'looped' by a strange man while walking alone on a bush trail (dude ran through the bush and was waiting up against a tree farther up the trail). As soon as I saw the guy waiting that 'run, run fast, NOW' instinct kicked in and we, rather ironically, stopped moving. Sulley was about 19 months old at the time, and he stepped out in front of me with raised hackles, started showing teeth and let out the growl that felt like it came from the depths of the earth. Buddy's face when about as white as the snow he was standing in and he took off. I have no idea exactly what that guy wanted, for all I know he could have wanted to know the time, but it was extremely creepy.

I had never, and have only once again seen Sulley do that. I'm 100% sure he was picking up on my retarded high stress level because we meet new people all the time and he's perfectly fine. The only other time he's really done that was when I was on a blind date and decided last minute to bring the dog. Sulley wouldn't let him within about 3 feet of me and wouldn't let him touch either of us. Still don't know what that was about, but it was a very quick date....I don't second guess my dog!
