Prong collars?

Just curious on what the deal is with these things? Some people seem to swear by them? So, what I'm wondering is, who uses them, what's the the correct way to use them and what's the proper way to fit one if you were to use one?

Snuffles is a lot more responsive with minor corrections with the prong. We use it on most walks or when ever we are in public. The choke wore down his fur where it slides and he was less responsive.

I used the leerburg link to learn. I wasn't putting it high enough so it was useless. Gloria doesn't need one, but I found it to be effective with other giant breeds I have owned. A minor correction registers, and I found myself never "yanking" like I did with a choke collar. Just my personal experience.

I started using a prong collar after my newfie girl decided that she was gonna take me for daily walks. I am going through chemo and radiation and am not always feeling very strong, at that point I thought that our daily walks would have to come to an end.

Fortunately, thanks to the people here on NN I was able to get a prong collar and learn how to use it. Koda and I can still enjoy a daily walk together and no one is afraid of being thrown under a car.

I never needed them on the girls..nor on Chance (since we got him at 8 yrs old), but YES on the Goldens. Not all, but a few were just wild on a leash!! Calmed them right down, and they all heel quite nicely now.

However, if wildlife is present the prong goes back on one 85 lb male Golden. He has quite the prey drive!

I now use a prong on my Marley. I started with a head collar, but he didn't like it and it was causing sores on his muzzle. 90% of the time he heels great, but that 10% of the time when he want's to chase a squirrel or something, I am sooo glad that prong is on.

I use a prong if I'm in unfamiliar surroundings with Eloise or if I'm near the water with her. The water especially, she'd pull me right in with her!

I never used a prong until I got Moonlight. We went to a professional trainer who said it was the only thing to use on a headstrong Newf. Boy, did she know what she was talking about. Now, we put on the prong when we're away from the house. I hardly ever have to even tug on it. She seems to know when she's wearing the prong it is time to behave like a lady!

Wouldn't be without the prong collar. Much more humane and keeps you both safe on walks.
