Progress or showdown?

Darwin is occasionally invited up onto our bed for a snuggle--maybe once or twice a week. Bali is always on our bed--morning, noon, and night. Mr. Kitty lives on the back of the sofa. If Darwin climbs on the sofa (when invited), there's spitting and growling, but no one backs down.

Today, though, I was laying in bed, feeling a little down--and invited him up. Bali is also very attentive to moods, and usually comes to offer a fur coat to massage. Darwin was smack in the center of the bed, while I laid across the head of the bed with Darwin's tail by my head. Bali was sitting on the bedside table... but slowly inched over to my head, and planted herself AGAINST darwin's back, and rested her face on my hand. It took a few minutes for Darwin to realize that she was TOUCHING HIM... but I told him firmly to stay. He listened.. but he was SO EXCITED that she was BY HIM.. after 15 months of the cold shoulder, and sharp claws!

So, while he DID stay, he totally started tail-flapping, and smacked her in the face. Oh my goodness, the indignity! She started spitting at him--he was taking over HER BED... and HER PLACE To offer snuggles when someone is feeling down.

That being said.. she totally came and laid AGAINST HIM! She didn't just lay on the bed NEAR HIM, but against him.

Do you think they will ever make peace?

All I can say is, I'm jealous. It definitely sounds like progress, and I doubt that Bali will give up trying to get close to him. She might need some time to regain her composure, but the more often she does get that close to Darwin, the less excited he'll get. It sounds like they'll be snuggle buddies in no time.

Bo caught our cat, Marge, in his mouth again today, so I'd kill for them to be friendly with each other.

Poor kitty! Darwin has never caught our cats--but they all get some good exercise when he doscovers they're wandering about. A few minutes ago, though, she was in the bathroom, he was outside the door. I opened it, Bali walked right under him, while he walked right past her. It was ALMOST peaceful!!'

 she is most likely trying to push him off :).......But it does sound like they are getting used to one another. I also like sleep in snuggles with our dogs

Well, it certainly sounds very positive! Hopefully Bali will continue to get more and more brave! As for us, there will NEVER be peace in this household between the Newf and the cats. *sigh*

As Darwin grows up, the kitties will become less interesting and he'll bother them less. I would suspect once they are no longer in fear of the chase the kitties will settle down and be normal around one another.

I'd say it's definitely a step in the right direction - just managing to have em in the same room together can be a feat, having them on the same bed... that's great. Sure there'll likely always be a little posturing on the cat's part - that's what they do - but they're on their way to working out their own hiearchy

It sounds like it's getting better. Cats are funny-I've had Mallory for 4 years now, and this past month she just started walking around and acting more social. It just took her longer than the others to get it was okay to be here.
Maggie was an obnoxious cat-chaser. She only bothered Mikey and Bethany, and now her and Bethany are buds. She'll walk over to her so Maggie can lick her, and do this weird chewing thing with her front teeth on her. Apparently, Bethany likes it.

We're still working on why it's not acceptable to lay on or hold down the kitties to make them stay with you, but I think she'll get it. In a few years.

Each of our cats are different. Checkers, 5 years, hides from everyone and everything and only looks for loving from my hubie and me, at night on our bed. Bailey, her sister, is social so Sophie and Jetta, our newfs, never bothered her. Gandalf, our new terror (4 months of holy heck) thinks he is one of the news, lines up with them for treats, walks right under their bellies as if they are not there, stands for slobbery kisses and grabs onto any tail for a ride as it goes past!
