Probiotics

This kind of goes with my other post about switching a lab pup to Orijen, but for those of you that use probiotics, at what age can you safely use them? I read these will help her as she makes the switch.
She is 12 weeks. I take a probiotic, however it says that the probiotic I take has whey in it. We suspect this puppy has allergies to grains, thats why we are switching to orijen, can she safely have the probiotic?

Is whey a common ingredient in probiotics? It's Acidophilus and has lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus casei, and lactobacillus bularicus. It said whey in the ingredient list. It does have minimum 1 billion CFU.

We are going to add pumpkin to her food as well!
I'm a bit neurotic, I know, but I want her to be healthy!

Probiotics are safe and extremely good for puppies. Whey is a dairy product, not wheat. If your dog has a dairy allergy there are probiotics available that are dairy free. They cost more, but are worth it to keep your baby healthy. You can get the dairy free ones in the refrigerated section of your natural food store. I give my Newfs probiotics everyday.

Charity,
Sounds great, thank you! Should I just give her a capsule a day? They come in 175mg capsules. I myself take 2 a day.
...she's about 27 lbs at 12 weeks.

I would give one capsule, but split it open. Sprinkle half over her breakfast and half over her supper. When she gets bigger you could give her a whole one with each meal.

Probiotics are the cats' backside. (sorry Dogs of War.)

I use a powder form that for each 1/4 tsp. has 7 billion CFU. They are not the least bit harmful. I do not believe any human or animal can OD on them.

Dex has been on this for years. In his middle years, I would give him 1/4 tsp. per day. Now because he is over 12 yo., he gets 1/4 tsp. each meal. Just helps the gut absorb better.

I started my Newf out on Probiotics for the first 2 years I think it was (acidophilus). Great for the gut (hers and mine for that matter). Now I just give them if she ever has to go on antibiotics or if I ever noticed she had a digestion problem etc. I love feeding pumpkin - its great for resolving constipation or loose stools.
good for you!

I've used Probiotics myself but I never thought about giving it to my dog.
Can only do good things.
