Prednisone - HELP!

Penny has been on prednisone now since coming home from the hospital. I am having a very tough time. It's been just 2 1/2 weeks since she started on it, and she is insane about food. CONSTANTLY. I can't even walk her, as she's looking to eat sticks and leaves. If I let her in the backyard to do her business, she looks for something to eat! ADVICE? I'm hoping we'll start weening her in another 2 weeks, but will I survive the next two weeks? The uncontrolled hunger seems to just be getting worse!

Increased hunger, thirst and urination are side effects of the predisone. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do about that I have found. I do usually allow them drink more water, and of course pay the price of having to get them out more. I try not to give much more food because I don't want them to put on weight. It will decrease as you wean her off the prednisone.

Yep, I have felt your pain. Try giving carrots or green beans to munch on. Some like celery too. Blueberries, strawberries, apples. At least it might help. Gojie was a feeding frenzy nightmare when he was taking pred.
My boy pee's like a racehorse without pred so you can imagine how he was ON it! LOL
Good luck

Talk to your vet. My vet recently mentioned to me there is now another med, simular to Pred, that does not have the same side effects. Especially hunger.

Like Debra, I used green beans. Kimber liked frozen green beans and she could eat a huge amount of them without gaining weight. I was buying them in the giant size bags and putting a half a pound of them on at a meal to get her full. It's the lowest cal way I know to fill them up.

cooked veg and oatmeal were some of the things we fed Beau while on Pred, beware though it was scary the amount of weight he put on even though we were careful of his calorie intake, we are still battling to get some of it off him.

Also increased drinking therefore lots of pee breaks

I go on pred sometimes for my asthma when it is very bad. I turn into a hormonal beast that would rather eat through you than ask you to move away from the cupboard or fridge. Your baby is hungry, legitimately and extremal hungry. I litereally understand. Supplement with some veg and ruffage if you can, and try breaking her meals into smaller more frequent portions if that is possible. I find I get slightly (ever so very slightly) less crazy if I have a snack every hour or so vs 3 meals a day. I had pred, and I can't be at work when I am on it...I am just a complete retard.

we broke Beaus meals down to three minimum and when we were home every day we broke it down to five meals so he never got that hunger swing so much

Byron is currently on 30mg of pred per day (down from 120 mg per day 6 weeks ago!) and is ravenously hungry at all times. He'd lost some weight from being sick and I was giving him a couple of snacks per day to tide him over, but now he's back at his normal weight and I don't want to overfeed, so he's on his normal feeding schedule...and is not a happy camper. I do give him as much access to water as he'd like, so he pees all the time. At least he's not leaking anymore, so he's out of the diapers! But yes, getting up every 2 hours night and day for weeks on end to let him pee is tiring!
