Portable Crate

Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to find me a portable crate for Bo to use during water training.

We need something pretty inexpensive and easy to fold up and put in the car. Any suggestions?

What size should we look for? 48"? 54"?

Thanks for the help. He doesn't use a crate at home so we don't have experience with crates at all...

I have a Jeep brand crate that I love, but I don't think they make it anymore. I got it before we had Maggie for traveling with our 2 cats, so its a little too small for Maggie. I am looking for one for the same purpose as you, and I plan to just go look at petsmart this weekend. They had a pretty good selection.

Things I learned....I like the soft-sided ones as they are lighter and provide shade. Look for one that folds up to the side of the ends, not the bottom, so it is smaller. I like the ones with multiple openings too (front, side, top).

I will let you know if I find one we like.

I know that eBay listing says portable...ours says that to but I can barely lift it by myself. By no means would I call it "portable" such that I'd take it to the lake for the day.

OTOH I think it'd be fine if I wanted to set it up in the back of a minivan.

This may not be the best solution for you, but I thought I'd share because it took me a while to figure out. We have a 48" folding wire crate. Willis isn't crated in the house anymore, but we will be using it for water training purposes. I have a Subaru and both the crate and Newf won't fit inside, so with Dawn's help (thanks, Dawn!) we found that this car carrier will hold the crate on top of the car: http://www.rei.com/product/753256/sportrack-aero-xl-roof-box and Willis will fit inside with all of our water training gear. We looked at tons of cargo boxes, and this is the only one that works with our crate. Good luck!

What about something like this?

I know this isn't what you were looking for, but when I googled, this is what I found. I can't imagine what the XL one looks like! :roflmao:

Haha! That's just what we need, a wood side table that Bo can hide inside...

I'm considering one of the soft sided crates, but I'm a little worried that Bo might scratch holes in all the mesh.

I've always had the foldup wire crates but I can no longer lift them into my car. The fabric ones always seemed like a good travel option but I've read stories (on NN) about dogs rolling them like a hamster in a wheel! And of course an aggressive chewer might not work well in one. Good luck.

If you're just using it for water training, it should be fine. Most of the ones i've seen have very sturdy mesh. I'm sure a determined & unsupervised newf could break out but it would certainly take a lot of determination.

I just can't lift the wire one and it doesn't fit well in the car. And no shade unless you bring a towel or blanket to put over it.
