Photo Editing in Photoshop

So, does the Camera Talk section include photo editing discussions too? Hope so, since that's what I'm posting about!

I read about this technique recently and decided to give it a try. Jim is a great artist and often does pencil sketches of the dogs, and when he walked by my computer he did a double take, saying "I don't remember drawing that one..."

I'm working on a Newfy one--it is a little more difficult with an all black dog....we'll see what I can do with it.

Here's my first attempt at it--the before and after....What do you think?

The white is a little stark still, so I need to correct that....any other tips?

I've had some PMs asking how the heck I did that, so here's very detailed instructions so that even first time Photoshop users can do this, it's very easy:

From the tool bar at the top click Layer--duplicate layer--OK

Image--Adjustments--Hue/Saturation--then slide the saturation curser all the way to the left so the image looks like black and white--OK

go back to Layer--duplicate layer--OK

Image--Adjustments--Invert

then in your Layers pop-up box, go to the drop down mode menu that says normal and change that to Color Dodge (the image should go pretty much all white)

From the top menu again, go to Filter--Blur--Guassian Blur-- then slide the curser around (probably to the left) until you get the image the way you want it)--OK

From the top menu, Layer--Flatten Image

Image--Adjustments--Brightness/Contrast--slide the contrast curser to the right to make the black pop, and slide the brightness to the left to soften the white---OK

That's it!
Hope you post your before and afters!

That is cool Sandra! I have been working in Painter IX with a photo of Bartlett and also fooling around with high key on a photo of Alex. Love Photoshop. The creative possibilities are endless! I need to get a wacom tablet now so I can get serious! This is cool that so many of us share this same interest.

Which version of photoshop are you using by the way?

I'm using CS2 as well and yes lots to learn. The photographer Andrzej Dragan has some amazing photoshop skills. His work is incredible.

Nice job on yours Sheila, it looks great!

SAR, I haven't used the diffuser yet, but certainly will. Jim got me a great PS book (2 of them actually) so I'm slowly working my way through....I've figured out how to take 10 lbs off a person so now I'm going to go back through old pictures of me and adjust them!

Did I hear WACOM tablet! I love mine! Got the big one. It's one of the best investments I've ever made! Only I sketch with it using Photoshop 7.

I use Photoshop a lot for our club's web design. The Adobe website has lots of useful tricks if you have time to weed through all of them.

I've been wanting a Wacom. I want the new wide aspect one but it's huge. Big is good, but then I have to clean my desk.

Besides all the great tutorials, there are lots of filters, actions and brushes out there, that you can download for free!

Don't know if any of you ever watch the Photoshop Guys, you can learn some basic stuff as well as more advanced things.

I try their tut's with CS2 open and pause the video as I go along...it's lot's of fun!

Photoshop Guys

Very nice, Sandra!
