Pawing

How do you stop a dog from pawing at you? The kids started to teach Bubba to shake a paw, but he started doing it whenever he met someone, and he's a little shall we say over-exuberant in doing it. Now sometimes when he want attention, he will paw at you, and if he meets other dogs, he will paw them. This is not so bad for larger dogs and adults, but I'm afraid he'll hurt a smaller dog or child, or an unsuspecting owner or parent will think he's trying to hurt their dog or kid. What do you all suggest? I've tried grabbing his paw and putting it down and saying no, but he just brings it right back up. Last week he knocked a Shi Tzu into a display at PetSmart and knocked everything out of the display in doing so

In each of my Newfoundland books it states, "pawing" is a trait. It doesn't have to be taught. Kodi has always done it, Riley very seldom! Guess it all depends on the individual Newf.

All of mine paw with, surprisingly, Panda being the worse but Samantha runs a close second. I try to teach Panda "no paw" sometimes she listens, sometimes she don't. Sara will at times, but mostly when she wants to be petted and I am ignoring the head butt. I have to agree, it is a newfy trait. Sure makes it easy to teach tricks like, high five and shake :D

Rory does not paw, but my little lab, Gaby, does. I used to take advantage of it and grab her paw and cut her nails until she wisened up. She does not do it as much now.

Tayla also paws when she wants attention. I constantly have claw marks down my arms and legs from her.

To get Gracie from pawing us I just use the command Not Allowed!! Usually she was pawing while begging for food or wanting a pat. She would not get either if that paw came up, if it stayed down I would give her a treat or pat on the head. It wasn't long till she learned that pawing just is not allowed for it does not get any positive reaction from us.
So now Gracie just substitued the head butt method instead of pawing  It works for her for I'm always too surprised to yell not allowed and too busy trying to wipe the slime off my back side

Bubba's Mom, thanks for the laugh of the day. The picture of the Newf knocking the Shi tzu into the display has me
Seriously, Angus paws too. in fact, if he's looking for a treat and the right paw doesn't make a treat appear, he switches to the left. Someday he's going to fall over!

:D It was quite comical. The little thing got up and just kept right on trying to play with Bubba, Joe and the other guy with the Shitz Tzu laughed, I was a little embarrased, but not as much as the poor guy. He said it's his wife's choice of dog, he'd much prefer a newf! :D

Maggie paws quite a bit too, mainly when we stop petting her
I noticed this behavior was quite prevalent with all the Newfies we saw when visiting breeders in the area. Maybe it is just one of those inborn things.
