Pawing

Calvin has a tendency to lift his paw and paw me to get my attention. I don't usually mind but sometimes if I ignore him he paws really hard and has left marks. Does anyone else's Newf do this? Our Murphy did but he was not as insistant.

My boy did this all the time. I liked to call it the "bear paw slap". I would literally have bruises running down the length of my thigh in the exact shape of nails digging in my leg! :) Honestly, it's one of the things I miss most about him!

Someone once told me they're called Newfie Colors! Water training has yielded lots of them on me.

The hardest part of Elvis' training was stopping this! We never, ever encouraged him to "shake/high five/give paw" because they're so big, heavy, and can do some damage. While we wouldn't mind if he did it on command, I was scared he'd do it to someone who wasn't expecting it or take out a kid by accident.

We would just say "NO" and remove his paw.

We did the opposite...we train the "give paw" or "high five" and "down paw". Lukey was dreadful and by putting cues to it we can now say "down-paw" and he knows what we mean. And we give him a couple of "give paw" into the hand to make him happy. It saves those injuries you get...We used clicker training to get there. We do the same for "bark" and "shush"....Find when you train something you are not to keen on and train the opposite, you get the control :)

Awww.... :hugs:

My chihuahua will do this. She paws, paws, paws, for attention, and I always picture her saying "um, um, um, mom?"

My girl started doing this a couple of months ago, and at first I thought it was cute. Until she came up to me for attention at the same time as my 1 year old toddler and instead of thumping me, she accidentally thumped him. Not cool. So I immediately stopped encouraging the behavior and trained her only to Paw on command. She got the hint pretty quickly and it completely stopped within a week. If you have any children around, I would recommend doing the same...good luck :)

I can remember sitting at a water test a few years ago when a bunch of us that water trained together each looked down at our bare legs and we were all bruised or scratched...what we don't do for our pups! Marcus is a "pawer" Max stares at you when he wants something.

Many a morning I have awoken to a bear paw crashing down on me. I've learned to keep his nails really short! We are working on removing the paw with a correction. He does paw on command, so we'll have to work on doing it only on command.
