papers?

I have a question that some of you may be able to help me out with. A friend of mine has a berner. She had him neutered about 6 months ago. Since then, she has been trying to get his limited registration paperwork from the breeder. She has called and left messages, sent a certified letter wth the neuter certificate, and emailed this woman multiple times and has been ignored. The only response back she got was when she first started to contact her and the breeder said she needed to know the litter information. It all seems a little funny to me. Why would a reputable breeder not want to send out the paperwork? She's going to try contacting her one more time. Can she threaten to report her to some agency if she doesn't get a response or answers? If yes, who would she report this breeder to?

He's just a family pet and she doesn't have any intention of showing him. Are the registration papers really important to have? When she was venting to me about this the other day I told her I would ask all you very intelligent newf. owners.

If she's not showing, and she's neutered him, I wouldn't worry about it. I had papers on all of my Newfs and never once got them out - well, not true: I showed my first Newf once, but AFTER that, I never ever got the papers out.

The only thing is whether or not she was charged show price for a paperless dog.

If your friend ever wanted to do Rally or Obedience with him she may want those Registration papers. She should contact AKC.

These two things together make me wonder if the Berner came from a puppy mill.

The litter information is suspicious to me because it sounds as if the "breeder" breeds so many puppies that he or she can't keep track of where they go.

I think your "reputable breeder" question MAY be self answering, in that the breeder is NOT.

Just my 2 cents. Putting my flame suit on NOW.

We didn't want the papers, but our breeder wanted us to get them. I never took them out until I went to look up Zeke lineage to find a suitable weight.

I could be wrong, but I think the AKC will only get involved if the limited registration is part of a breeder's contract. Does the Berner owner have a contract stipulating Limited Registration say.... after neuter? I don't understand why they didn't get papers right away, unless there was a contract requiring a neuter/spay first.

My second Newf was on a limited registration. We got the registration papers when we got the puppy, we just had to finish filling it out and send it to the AKC. The whole point in limited registration is that any offspring of a dog on limited registration cannot be registered with AKC.

Often, a BYB will not have papers, as they breed LR PB dogs, so they can't register the litter. If this is the case, AKC won't help at all. You can get an ILP if there are no papers, and still particpate in performance events.

Like Garden Girl, we got Zuzu's paperwork when we picked her up. She is a limited registration, definitely not a dog with show potential. I never got Cooper's papers because I think his previous family never returned them to the breeder. I've never needed them for any reason, though...

Zuzu is my only puppy and that's how it worked; I don't know if that's the norm or if some breeders wait some time before sending out. Sorry.

We have maggies papers, but never sent them in. Knew we weren't going to breed or show, she is just family.
The way I read it, seems like your friend is more upset about the way they are being treated by the breeder, not so much about having the papers in hand. Hope it works out for them though. I don't know where you would beging to report, but I am sure there is someone on here who can help.
