Out of date meds

I have been cleaning out the laundry room lately. In doing so, I've found some old medicines and sprays that are out of date. These are all the "kids" medicines. And as we are living a more holistic canine lifestyle, I know not what to do with these chemicals. I really don't want to flush them down the drain, we are on a septic. I don't really want to put them in the garbage as they'd end up in a landfill. I'm rather at a loss.

Any suggestions?

Does your town/county have hazardous waste collections every so often? In my area, those types of items can be turned in then.

I turn all my stuff into the hazardous waste facility, but most pharmacies in Canada will take them as well. I would ask yours, and some that are close to you. Also ask your vet.

Most often recommended method is to crush the pills and dispose of them along with something like your used coffee grounds. I crush them up and dispose of them mixed in with the stuff I remove from the cat box....
Checking with your vet is a good idea, too...they may have some method in place to dispose of old/damaged/ medications.

Do Drug stores not dispose of old meds in the U.S? Here it is a recognised service and each year they advertise the fact on the local radio for people to check their medications and not hoard them.

really? wow...that is common practice here in Canada. The do not want them flushed out put out with the trash, they want them disposed of properly. I would ring up your vet....they must have some way to dispose of the meds.
